Our strength in the 80s is now our achilles heel. Times change and we havent gone with that change fully.

its looking at the long term picture not the short term easy fix.

Look its great that Bruce and Jeanie put their hands in their pockets to help the club out

But we rely too much on it.

The club need to find new ways to make revenue. To look at the game long term. There is a huge opportunity to grow the game overseas. Asia is close with a huge population base and 3 hours behind us in world time.

That is where the game will develop the most in the next 30 years. The board needs to look at this. To my knowledge the board havent seriously looked at it at all.

I'm not against it at all...but if you want to ask a board member if they'd seriously look into playing games in Asia then ask it.

Hyundai Blues vs Kia Bombers in Korea? You'd have to have a pretty good business plan ready for the AFL. This isn't the NFL or MLB...the clubs are at the behest of the AFL. You'd have to match time zones. And what's the global market demand for the game overseas? It ain't great.

How would you make money? How would you afford it? How would you logistically do it? Can you insure the event? There's a lot to consider.

Play games in Korea as a money spinner? Fanciful!

Why do we need to go that far outside the box ?

How about ways to get existing members and supporters closer to the club ?

And make the club exciting so people and corporate sponsors might want to partner?

The last one is your best point. Carlton are two 'big' sponsors short. I'm confident the club will find one...but not two. Like you Synners...some companies will be employing a 'wait and see' with regard to Carlton. But there's no reason why the club can't go far and wide to procure another sponsor. That's what you need first and foremost before you even think about a game o/s.

Have they looked to Air China? Flies out of Melbourne, flies to both Shanghai and Beijing, Star Alliance partner and you can use Air New Zealand lounges at Melbourne and Sydney airports...Easier said than done of course, but seems a no brainer to me. CGU's 7 year deal with Collingwood is worth $14million. That's the kind of sponsorship $ I'm talking about.

This, and a move to the 'G in 2015 are the sorts of things we need if Carlton are serious. I'd like to think there's some appropriate know-how at the club to get these things done. If they can't - then they're merely 'spinning wheels' and playing catch-up to the Pies and Hawks of this world.

We also need to make the match day 'experience' something different.

Another area where I'm not sure where we can do much different than what the AFL dictates.

To be honest, I don't any club particularly excels at this.

Here's an idea.

Let's get those nuff nuffs to STFU during the breaks so you can actually have a chat to the people you chose to go to the footy with rather than having to listen to some wanker who didn't get beyond the first round of whatever the latest shit piece of reality TV is interviewing Barry from Broadmeadows who's just won a hat for pointing out that Marc Murphy's wearing a Carlton jumper.

If we can engineer that I'll re-sign.

This is the sort of thing I mean:

1. Get rid of the generic 'host', make the 'host' a club person, former player, anyone but the guy that was wearing an Essendon* scarf the night before.

2. Show highlights pre game, any highlights, the last time we pantsed the team, a compilation of recent history between the two clubs. Anything.

3. People won't like this, but if possible how about dimming the lights when we run out at Etihad, create some atmosphere when we 'arrive' on the ground. Spotlight us running out, make a big deal, get the crowd cheering.

4. Win or Lose our players should present items to kids in the crowd post game, other clubs do it but we rarely do (correct me if I'm wrong). This small act make a child extremely happy, who knows what the flow on effect is?

5. Show the team singing the theme song on the scoreboard???

I'm sure you get the general idea, people want more than just a shit game of footy these days, and they deserve more than the generic crap that the AFL feeds us.

If they stopped trying to dress it up as "entertainment" it wouldn't be so @#$%&! boring.

I don't want a host. If i did I'd go on Sale of the Century.

I'd love to see the results of a survey on how many people actually enjoy that shit.

I've never met one.

It started with American football because it takes three hours to play a one hour game. At the quarter and half time breaks in the AFL I want a breather and a chance to reflect on what's happening in the game - not Livinia Nixon with testicles.

You don't like it because it is done so poorly. Done well it will get people coming back and more bums on seats.

You haven't met anyone that likes it because it is crap, cringeworthy and not club run.

I'm talking more pre game than 1/4 time & 3/4 time, agree that we don't need someone 'yelling' at us for two hours.

Before game I'll cop only because I usually arrive 2 minutes before the bounce.

You're right. There's very little reason to get to the ground early these days...compared to when we were boys of course...

U19s and the Reserves would get me there earlier.

I think the girls had to be over 21 to be a Bluebird.

The AFL has expressed a desire to play games for 4 points overseas.
there would possibly be financial assistance from the AFL and two governments for starters.

St Kilda are doing it in NZ

Lets ask Ruffy what he thinks

oh thats right he left a while back

the thing is there are 18 clubs who have to fight over the corporate pie for sponsorship.

Again its the big picture
and you never know a second big sponsor may come on board because of it.

I dont know why we have to think a bout playing games in the coloseum , sahara or mars... the game isnt an international game.. it never will be ... and our bread and butter is in australia... if we cant get things right with our supporters here or interstate im at a loss to know why wed be looking o/s

Its Australias elite sport but ts way behind the rest of the world..... im pretty sure there are a heap of things we can still do here (Like Collingwood is ) to put daylight between ourselves and the competition without resorting to NZ etc

I agree 100%

will the members want it? Nope
will we increase our membership as a result? Nope
will our players be worse off from the travel during the season? Yep
Is there a long term benefit to the club? Nope
Are the 'leading' clubs doing this? Nope
