THE AFL has pulled the plug on Carlton superstar Chris Judd's controversial third-party deal with Visy.

In a shock crackdown, the Blues have been told the $250,000-a-year deal can no longer be paid outside the salary cap.

Judd is not alone, with other contentious third-party deals with big names across the league facing unprecedented heat.

Putting aside the amateur AFL, if true, an extra $250k on top of a very lucrative salary is pretty damn good coin.

Million dollar question (pun intended), has it been worth it?

Deliver #17 in the next year or 2 and you'll get no argument from me.

But if we don't, I wonder how we'll honestly view the Judd era.

Not a bad player though

Sue the AFL for breach of contract. Can't unilaterally alter the terms of an agreement.

Why is Judd the only one named then if there are other "big names" affected?

I suppose the third party agreement is the reason why umpires (may have been instructed) to allow opponents to pinch punch elbow hold and scrag Judd wen he doesn't have the ball and not be concerned about the rules regarding them having eyes on the ball not the man (Judd)...because the umpires will turn a blind eye to it all.

If that's the case its a strange way the AFL or jealous umpires (of Judds earnings) have dealt with the illegal behaviour of his opponents.

Whereas when Judd elbows an opponent no matter how soft and standard it is (refer to Pridis incident) he receives a 50M penalty.

If the change in 3rd party agreements implies that Judd will be protected by the rules of the game in future then its a good idea, but I wish we all new that was the case and didn't remain secretive....it seems the AFL have enforced a different set of rules for Judd.

Lets say The AFL have been strange with their silence with regards to the 3rd party deal they signed off let alone the consistent illegal treatment Judd receives from opponents.

Just sayin.

PS I don't like 3rd party deals.

Agreed. More reactionary, media-driven bullshit, trying to cover their arses because of the Crows exposing their (and Mr Wood's) incompetence and yet more proof that Eddie secretly runs this comp.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson last night confirmed to the Herald Sun that Judd's deal with Visy could no longer be excluded from the salary cap.

"It is not appropriate to release my specific reasons for exercising my discretion in this case to refuse approval for the arrangements to be excluded from Carlton's salary cap," Anderson said.

"My decision is related to a tightening of the rules."
It emerged last night that Adelaide captain Nathan van Berlo was under investigation for third-party payments outside the salary cap.

Helps explain the inactivity in trade week...250k would be a couple of % points on the TPP. When its mandatory you have to pay 96% of the cap doesn't leave a lot of wriggle room.

Maybe we'll see some retractions from the sky is falling group of nellies on this site......

I'd say we've known about this for a while and it explains the talk of us being under salary cap pressure.

The article says "it's widely known Malthouse was frustrated at so little cap space"

Since when?

The article reeks of poor journalism however Carlton would have known about the end of the Judd deal well before October 22nd I imagine.

And as has been mentioned who would we have traded for? Dawes? Byrnes? Gysberts? Lynch?

Other than Goddard to Essendon*, no other trades strike me as anything terribly impressive.

Roll on Blues

Farcical. AFL signs it off then the exact same administration pulls the pin on it. How many clubs can just find $250k in the cap overnight?

The AFL are a joke. I have no problem with them not allowing it to be extended after the initial agreement expired but how can they tick off on it and then change the rules before the agreement ended? The article says that the club were informed on October 22nd, so 2/3 's of the way through the trade period they inform us. Bad luck if we had traded in a new player thinking our salary cap had room.
His manager was radio this morning, not a happy man and says this isnt the end of it. This is one that could be challenged successfully in court. Why can the AFL control who a player works for? It would be no different to my boss telling me i couldnt get a second job.
