He must offer something I suppose. But aside from making all the other coaches seem smarter and better looking, I'm struggling to see what it could be.

One of the questions for me is how much was it a case of Barker implementing Ratten's game plan as forward coach, and how much was it Barker being charged with devising his own system to fit in with Ratten's game plan.

IMHO, Ratten's game plan, and especially the plan going into forward 50, was deeply flawed. If Barker was carrying out instructions, then it mitigates to some degree the apparent lack of cohesion and potency of the forward line. It will be interesting to see next year, when MM gives Barker a very definite brief on how the forward half should structure up, whether Barker is able to implement that.

Has more to do with Barker having a guaranteed contract for 2013 than anything else I'd think.

It would've been nice to get someone who had playing under one of the more recent multiple premiership coaches, (I'm thinking people like Matthews, Thompson ... ).

I suppose we did try.

Anyway, I get the feeling that MM's not really too concerned with any else's ideas, so long as they'll implement his. (And I guess that is what we're paying the big bucks for).

Sh1t I hope not - as experience tells us, part-time works perfectly well so why not save the money.

Would you pack up and move across the other side of the country for a part time role?

I dunno, it's not like the daily commute would be that bad from Perth.

I dont believe any of the others had a contract for the entire year. Williams received 3 months and Riley was being retrenched until we reached an agreement with him. So yeh maybe we could have done similar with Barker, but without that contract Im not sure he'd still be here in 2013.

In fairness none of us can speculate whether it's the chicken or the egg in this case, and you'd like to think that receiving clear instructions from Mick would give him the best opportunity to succeed. I just think back though to all those Hawks supporters beaming that he was gone and laughing at us for taking him.
