Worse thing Ratts can do is take the Port job. He isn't ready and he is still bitter about what happened at Carlton.

The best thing he can do for his coaching career is go and spend 2-3 years under a seasoned coach ala Sheedy, Worsfold or Clarkson.

There are holes in his experience and knowledge and he needs experience to be able to develop his philosophies, message and skills.

If he goes to Port, he will achieve little and will be irrelevant in coaching circles inside 2-3 years.

Need to seriously think about what he is doing.

If someone came to you and gave you the choice between earning $500kpaor more now for three years or approx $150k a year, which would you take?

Ratten should coach Port Adelaide.
His emotional attachment to the club will not be there at Port and therefore will be a better coach for it again.
He can coach!

That's the type of thinking I'd expect.

1. Port will pay around $400k (thats all the AFL will allow) and as an assistant at a strong club he would be on around $250k.

2. He is still young and needs to build a "career" not a short term money grab. Would you prefer a 2-3 year job at $500k a year or a career where your earning capacity keeps improving for as long as you want?

3. If he is serious about being a "career coach" a 2-3 contract with Port Adelaide, with and average list, no money, poor facilities, poor crowds and support could only harm his future.

4. He is still young. Go to someone like GWS, get 2-3 years with gun talent, unlimited money, great facilities and with and experienced coach. For 2-3 years Sheedy will take the heat and Ratten can learn and effectively coach anyway. A similar spot a Hawthorn, WCE, Freo under those coaches would do him wonders.

5. He has limited experience away from Carlton and has NOT done any serious coaching under an experienced coach. He needs to get away, see how others do it, then properly assess what he did right and wrong and improve.

I have said it before. He could be a very good coach but it was short term thinking that got him sacked in the first place.

I doubt Port would pay him $500. So bearing in mind we have to next year, he could earn $800k over 2 years as an assistant.

No need for rolling eyeballs.

If I was a senior coach who'd just been flicked I would be very keen to secure another senior gig. Apart from the cash there are also the following legitimate reasons.

a) There are a lot of suitably qualified coaches looking for a senior gig and very few positions. I think there are now 150 coaches currently employed by the various clubs. Not all of them are suitably qualified and not all want to be senior coaches, but it's a competitive field. Plenty of perennial bridesmaids getting about over the last couple of decades. Looks like we may even get one as our senior asst.
b) There are not many positions for failed (as perceived by the industry) senior coaches. Once you've been sacked your papers can be stamped. Chocco hasn't secured a senior spot and his record is pretty impressive.
c) You're the boss. Can you imagine going to GWS and having to work under Sheedy?

If you have been a senior coach and you think you have the ability then it just makes sense.

Plus, there's the money.

SPOT ON!!
If Ratts genuinely believes that he will develop as a coach in PA, he is a naive fool. The SA public will chew him up and spit him out once the Bambi love affair is over.
I also believe that Ratts needs a few years learning from other coaches out there. If he plays his cards right, the door may still be open at Carlton again in 5-10 years time. Even then he'd be in his late 40's. The PA job will end his career as a senior coach.

Depends how long you want to stay in the coaching caper.....and also depends on whether you want the short term money gain more or the long term credibility as coach (money will follow) more

Ratten will have little impact at PA. The greatest impact will be on his long term value as a coach

Not necessarily.
I think the only way Ratten can survive as coach of Port is with an experienced director of coaching.
Together I believe they could turn the Port Titanic around from sinking.

Ratten isn't the worst coach but he isn't the best either.

If he realizes he needs to employ those around him to strengthen his weaknesses it can work.

If not, doom!

Or he could just end up as an assistant forever.

Fair question.

Who else do you think needs to go from the coaching panel Synbad? And what do you think their replacements need to bring that these guys haven't done?

I think the big thing is......

What we didnt have.

Cazzesman was a huge supporter of
Ratts
Hughes.
The VFL coach in Hyde
Cordy Well they all had a go at this guy didnt he?
The development coach... he ran off to WA with his tail between his legs too.
Sticks
Watson... will go the way of the others too....
Half back flankers

etc
etc
etc

All failures!!!... every single one of Cazzesmans posterboys failed miserably...

Cazzesman argued for these guys till he was purple in the face.....with some weird kind of psyche he is pretending he was right all along.

Strange psychological behaviour....

Hope his judgement in recruiting young talent is abit better than what he has tried to convinc.e us with so far

Its a concern.....
