If you lined up all of the AFL’s coaches and players and asked who wanted to go, all of them would because it’s the challenge.

What a load of shit. Some AFL players and coaches think they are God like because they're involoved in football.
Wanting to achieve and face challenges is part of your character. Whether you have the extra ability and physical composition to chase a piece of leather is irrelevant.
I know people who have faced terminal illnesses or others who have come back from severe physical injuries who have more character than half the AFL players or coaches.
What a !@#$%& wank.

I'm trying hard to be positive but !@#$%& nonsense like this is making it very difficult.

  C'mon BV give him at least a season.

I am not impressed with his media speak just before and after taking the Carlton job but am happy to cop it if it means improvement in player development, and maximising of list potential.

Shades of Mourinho at Real. Similar type of guys.

Everybody has a right to use this board as they see fit as long as they arent trolling.

BV isnt a troll...

Myself.. im happy Ratten is gone.. and i dont care who took his place as nobody.. could ever do that job worse.
He is bitching and media and believes he was hard done by.

An underqualified coach who would never get a job anywhere else and had more than 5 years at the club landing us one eliminational final win.. and could hardly string 4 wins in a row together.. thinks he was hard done by.

As for MM... in my opinion he will be one hell of an improvement....!!...
He will galvanize the group and make them play harder and smarter....

Thats my opinion... but give it 12 weeks and we will have a better idea

You also said that if Ratts was any good there would be other teams interested in him but there wasn't. Yet he is a monty for the Port job.

Oh. Port Adelaide. Ah I guess it still holds true.

MM has a fair way to go before his self-important philosophical pronouncements annoy me even half as much as ratten's probably-maybe self-doubt-filled ramblings did.

Well he's about to, so be prepared to be extremely surprised.

I'd be surprised too. Wouldn't there just be a couple of red flags for an interview panel concerning....oh, I dunno - the Round 10 fixture where he was outcoached by Matthew Primus (now sacked) and Port defeated a disinterested Carlton outfit whose coaching staff, led by Ratten, seemingly had no creative counter to what ended being a 54-point drubbing in driving rain?

First questions to Ratten should be...

'Hi Brett. Let's go revisit Round 10. Why did you start Paul Bower in the forward line that night?'
'What response in the coaching box did you have to Rob Warnock being double-teamed?' 'When did you notice this happening, and why did it take you so long to react?' 'You played Jeff Garlett through the centre that night...should we expect you'll do the same with Danyle Pearce?' 'Is it the players fault or the coaches fault?' 'Did you order the Code Red? 'Did you order the Code Red?
Ratts: 'You're Goddamn right I did!

...yeah...anyway...it would surprise me if he was given another senior gig too...

It probably doesn't matter to Ratts, but his much admired, dignified exit will quickly be forgotten if he cant just move on without moaning in the media.

Im not sure how he is a monty..... he is pushing himself out there way too much.....commenting on us way too much to actually be a monty for any kind of job.,,,,

At the press conference I think Malthouse should have done a Clint Eastwood at the republican convention with Eddie Maguire as the vacant chair.

I'd be very surprised if Ratts got the Port job as senior coach.
Keep in mind they have been in the market over 2 months without interviewing anyone.
I think they are waiting till Eade is available ie Collingwood loses.

I reckon Eade would be crazy to take it, career suicide walking into that club. He'd be much better off sticking with Collingwood until a better opportunity comes up.

Fair question.

Who else do you think needs to go from the coaching panel Synbad? And what do you think their replacements need to bring that these guys haven't done?

One thing that out situation under Ratten has shown me is that on a coaching panel, it's no use having the tail wag the dog. We appointed an untried coach with minimal experience as an assistant, and surrounded him with assistants with no experience. The Board should have resigned purely on that. We then realised the problem, and surrounded Ratten with a bunch of very experienced, and from all reports, very good assistants (certainly Brown, Richardson and even Williams came highly credentialed and with great reputations). But at the end of the day, the assistants cannot make the coach.

What a coaching department needs is a good, strong, talented coach, who can stamp game plan and leadership and culture, surrounded by talented assistants, experienced or not, who can communicate and teach the coach's message and plans. To that effect, the assistants are only really as good as the senior coach (and the senior coach's game plan, leadership etc) allows.

That doesn't answer your question Sin City (and I'm certainly not trying to answer for Synbad, I'd be interested to read his thoughts), but I think that who Malthouse appoints as assistants will have as much to do with his relationships with those people as perceived or known ability. With a strong coach like Malthouse, it will pretty quickly become clear whether or not an assistant is able to teach the game plan, leadership etc to his group, or not.

I really think Ratts will get it - he takes over Port in a not dissimilar situation as that when he started coaching the Blues - he has a better than 50% winning percentage -is still very young in terms of coaching - he has a character that will bond the Port players/team together and has coached finals - great opportunity for him to carry on his coaching career -they get an experienced but young coach from outside the port culture - I hope he does get it

My knock on him from the start was whether he could take us to the ultimate prize and ultimately it was determined he couldnt - not sure this would be weighing heavily on Ports mind in selecting a coach at this time in their developmental cycle
