So what's that version? I'm curious to listen to the whole. Maybe an early recording?

I recommend if you haven't already, as Carlton supporter to read his book written with David Buttifant.

His philosophies are basically the exact opposite of everything that people complain about that is, and has been wrong with our club for the last five, ten, do I hear fifteen years.

You read paragraphs and find yourself nodding when he talks about team ethos, non reliance on individuals, giving clear messages, indentifying leaders, pushing the boundaries, being able to balance long term goals with short term ones etc etc.

As long as the dementia hasn't fully taken over, I reassure myself with the fact that MM would not take any job that would make him look the fool.

He is heavily involved in the industry. He works with recently retired players, he would have sort their opinion on our club, our list, what it was like to play against them, how well they thought we were coached, and what do they see as our deficiencies.

The assistants (or lieutenants!) that he chooses will be chosen for a reason. Sure they will be his mates, cronies, whatever but unlike the last 5 years of Ratts/Riley and a revolving door of hand picked assistants they will all be pushing in the one direction.

McKay has been looking at this area for months now. MM would have a heap of guys he could call on, but will choose the ones he believes that will best suit the areas that those still in charge believe need the most work.

He had a poor GF in '11 there's no denying that, but the manic intensity that he had that side playing at for that 2-3 year period has not been repeated in 2012.

The game that we played them in Round 17 2010 has stuck with me. We held on for what felt like about 8 minutes and from then on we were slaughtered. It wasn't about poor kicking, missed shots, shallow forward entries, kicking pockets, we just got overwhelmed by their intensity. We never looked like scoring. 25 shots to 5 at 3/4 time said it all.

He had the likes of Leigh Brown, Alan Toovey, Brent McCaffer, Jared Blair, Harry OBrien, Nick Maxwell, Tyson Goldsack playing above themselves by instilling belief that they were just as important to the team as anyone else. Pendlebury went to another level, Thomas went from a flaky outside player to a gut running, tackling machine.

Anyway BV will probably say his book and preachings are not worth wiping your arse with, and I respect his opinion. I understand that this could easily go pear shaped. Unlike 10 years ago where I naively ignored the warning from Kangaroos supporters due to what I thought was jealously, I will remain cautiously optimistic before being proved otherwise.....

....Until then at the very worst, just purely wanting to believe will at least get me through the Summer...

Full buy-in!

YEP...enjoyed this post...good read.

Looks like MM is revitalised to me.
Opened up the mind furthermore interacting in the media and out of the Pies' bubble.
Cathartic. Now he's with us. Cleansed....and he barracked for Carlton as a kid. I wish I knew that all those years ago.

I know...I should say, I think he's a prick, but as I fully dig his style. I understand leadership and its demands. It seems he brings out the best in people by pushing them to they succeed with the commitment they made from the outset: the end goal....and he sticks to his guns...it worries me that Ratts did that too...and so did Nathan Buckley twice this year....flexible enough? We'll see.

I reckon he'll pull it off, and then again I thought anyone would with our list, if they stayed fit....but then I just swa on Fox Judd didn't make Brad Johnson's 2012 AA team.....maybe they aren't as good as I think.

Pretty obvious to me we need to inject something more than the return of injured players to win the 17th in MM's reign.

Every year I'm excited with anticipation of whom we'll attract ($$$), and Brock was the only exciting thing we've drafted ($$$) and have been disappointed for more than a decade cos other than Judd I have to go back and think of Hickmott as the last good trade...Stevens fell in our hands.

I'm a believer cos I want to believe.

Almost missed your post.

I'm not anti the change though..just really slow at adjusting, and fair chance I'll always dislike this man. However, as others point out...so what! we don't have to like Pinocchio,
we just need a coach that improves the players.
I hope it's Mick the Messiah, and not another lost chapter in our history.

Can't help feeling that history is already being rewritten by Malty though.
We DID have a hec of a lot of injuries. Yes, there were underlying problems, but Gibbs was supposed to go to the mid field, and would have if the injuries had been less. It's not a new idea.Stuff like that will irk me, but not enough so I can't enjoy us winning more games.

Oh, and Blueboy74, great post, I'll take your word for it, and hope he implements his best ideas with our club.
but....it's not SORT, as in 'sort it out'. It's SOUGHT as in 'sought their opinion'. k? ok.

Different club, but same grumpy Malthouse

Yeah, Jon Ralph was bitching about the presser this morning too. Unprofessional of Mick, and Mick really should've taken the opportunity to inspire Carlton supporters rather than taking potshots and answering "absolutely" about going after Cloke and disrupting Collingwood's finals campaign. He thinks Mick should've spent the presser outlining exactly what he's going to do with the gameplan and our players.

What Jon Ralph chooses to misunderstand is this:

As Gore Vidal put it "It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail". As Carlton supporters, right now those others are Collingwood. Everyone who works for Carlton has two missions: firstly, to do whatever they can to help Carlton succeed. Secondly, to NEVER miss an opportunity to stick a spoke in the wheels of the old enemies.

What Mick did yesterday is heap further disruption upon Collingwood as they try to prepare for a knockout final, and I effing loved it. I'll bet most other carlton supporters did too.

And furthermore, all he really did is return serve from McGuire's earlier season comments about Malthouse coaching carlton, which were clearly designed to destabilise our club.

After nearly 3 decades, all supporters know what Malthouse brings. He's not a junior coach who has to lay down his philosophies at a press conference.

Malthouse's job yesterday was to announce his presence (I use that word deliberately) at the club, and not a lot more. That he also managed to chuck a hand grenade at the team everyone at carlton hopes will go out in straight sets was a bonus.

After 5 years of a senior coach umming and ahhing and vacillating and muddling his way through pressers, how refreshing was it to hear that one word F-You Collingwood answer to the question of "Will you go after Travis Cloke?" .... "Absolutely."

Loved every bit of it.

Screw you Ralphy. You don't speak for us.

Damian Barrett just on Footy Show with an appalling concoction of beat-ups, speculation, irrelevant dot-joining in relation to Blues assistant coaches and anything that he could fling at MM, including his "history" with Heath Scotland.
No wonder MM just flattens these guys. Pathetic muckraking in order to try to get a profile as a key newsbreaker. Hutchy tried a few years ago but at least has pulled his head in - and he has a little more credibility as a result.

Malthouse has been aggressive with the media for years and when you combine that with the obvious bullshit he's been spinning throughout this whole process then muckraking was always going to happen. It will die down very soon and be replaced by preseason fluff pieces about the Malthouse way and other meaningless journo rubbish.

..who's to say that Gibbs couldn't have played thru the middle.. ..we suffered injuries on pretty much every line.. ..plus there's a school of thought that i often adhere to that states you have your best players in the thick of the action.. ..the idea that he's so desperately needed in defense to me sounds like we were already conceding 'defeat' in the middle/stoppages.. ..i think that more talent around the ball would have helped ease some of the load on the backline anyway..
