We needn't have given Kennedy to get the deal done - picks 3 & 20 should have been enough - in particular given the compensation picks that Geelong got for Ablett.

Don't be ridiculous.
Geelong didn't trade Ablett, he walked out under special circumstances.

The AFL rated Ablett worth 2 first round draft picks as I recall ( picks 5 & 15) - which is what the AFL compensated Geelong with - giving West Coast Piks 3 & 20 should have been more than enough.

So before you go off half cocked throwing accusations of ridiculous .........

The AFL gave the same for Scully. Nobody actually suggested that that was what Ablett was worth, it's just what Geelong received in compensation.

Actually, I recall Synners not totally supporting the trade at the trade, AND reassuring everyone though that the trade was going to happen.

while we're on the topic of hindsight.

I think we should've pushed harder to get Ahmed Saad. Now with Eddie Betts playing out of the goal square it would of made sense to have gotten Saad to fill a void in the CHF position left by Eddie. Have him leading up the ground ala Nick Riewoldt, Travis Cloke

And i didnt FULLY support Judd... though i was reporting we would get him.....

But KOUTA here... who is the general on big footy..(he has run away for some reason ) used to quote me saying .."We should never do deals like the judd deal " as his singature 4 years ago....

5 years on.... he isnt the messiah we thought he was is he???

5 million dollars later... Kennedy Masten and a pick 20.....

Still he might just do it....

I was 'agen' it from the start and now many want us to do something similar with Caddy to 'complete' our midfield that we have been trying to 'complete' for years. It's not that I wouldn't want him at the club but I don't think it ever as simple as 'get him'. We need to learn to really back ourselves in with recruiting and not simply buy any decent player that more or less fits what we think we want or need. We also need learn to own any decision in terms of our list management. If we don't, we'll continually see the gap widen every time we think we've crossed it.

Actually picks 10 and 15 :banghead:

Picks 3 & 20 should have been sufficient considering we were in the box seat....

To win a flag the answer is simple we need Cloke. The reality is if we think we can win it then we need to take a punt and offer him 5 or 6 years, if it back fires so be it but atleast we had a crack.

If the view is this list can't win a flag in the next 2 years then the risk is not worth taking.

Imagine what Geelong would have got for Ablett if he was traded old school style. A lot more than what the AFL dished up with the system used to get the player to the new club GC you would have to agree.

More than what WC got for Judd i would imagine.

I think 2 first round draft picks is about right - for the calibre of players like Chris Judd and Gary Ablett Junior.

We gave effectively 3 first round players up for Judd, Kennedy (Pick 4 in the 2005 Draft) and Picks 3 & 20.

Geelong would have got a lot more for Ablett in a trade.
Melbourne and Hawthorn would have got a lot less.

Exactly - there's no way you can compare the AFL's compensation picks for what happens in a trading situation.

Also, picks 3, 20 and Kennedy were all just potential all those years ago. If Kennedy was the player then that he is now we wouldn't have to have given up as much.

And don't forget Armfield!

Everyone always forgets Armfield!

Fevola fetched Henda ( pick 8 ) and pick 12 and he was drunken, old, gambling addict that rested up against the fence when the ball wasnt at his end.

Geelong would have got a lot more that the two compo picks if traded.

Odd thing about Kennedy is how over rated he is. He is good player no doubt, but in all his time at the Eagles he has had 1 top 10 finish in the B&F. Didn't even make it last year.

The trade has ended so far in our favour it is not funny.

Its more the fact that he would be perfect for us right now that gets people worked up. You need to give to get. We needed Judd so it cost us.

True, but considering we retained pick 1, I think we did exceptionally well
