Sydney, you've been strong in your opinion on the coaching situation, as have many of us. I'm curious though, is there anything that could happen next year that would make you change your view and think that it was a good move to appoint Malthouse instead of Ratten?
For me, the things I am looking for are a hard, contested game plan, better onfield leadership, significant improvement in players like Gibbs, Kreuzer, Yarran and obviously the kids, and the beginnings of cultural shift in the club (much harder to measure and not only the sole responsibility of the coach).
Carlton will improve next year by the mere fact that players will be available to play - If Mick is dealt the same injury list that Ratten was given we will miss the finals again . Everyone is singing the praises of Lyon and the most likely will beat Adelaide this week but won't go any further. Freo were tracking for finals last year and Harvey was dealt the same hand as Ratten as far as injuries go and Freo were going to improve regardless of Lyon
He needs to bring in a toughness that appeared to be developing last year but went missing this year - Players need to have a never say die attitude because at the moment as soon as it gets tough they curl up in the corner and cry. Far to often it is left to Judd to lift them up and blokes like Murph and Gibbs ride on his coat tails . Carlton player accept losing like they are a bottom of the table team .
Mick appears to be a fairly confronting type of bloke and judging by how are blokes take pressure the moment Mick barrels them up they will go to water. There will be no sitting in a circle discussing lifes issues with Mick. This will drive a wedge through the playing group and send the club backwards for another 5 to 10 years
And if he hopes that this around the boundary precise kicking game he employed at the pies is going to work at Carlton he is dreaming because unless in the off season the AFL introduces nets around the ground and abandons the OBOF rule this will not work with the ball butcherers we currently have
The experiment will end in tears again
