Jeff gives his $0.02
Jeff Kennett wrote:
Brett Ratten is quite obviously a very decent bloke. His crime was not to deliver his team to the position on the ladder that was set by his board. Not, of course, all the coach's responsibility - the board and players must accept their fair share of the blame, too.

So often in life it is in defeat that an individual best acquits himself, as Ratten did at the press conference announcing his sacking, as well as the dignified way he handled his departure on Sunday.

The same dignity was absent from the management of the Carlton Football Club. Their performance has been appalling, and can only have members and supporters genuinely worried about their professionalism.

What a poor example of good leadership and what contradictory messages they were sending out to the community.

Even a week-and-a-bit ago, their line was that no decision would be made until after the last game of the home-and-away season. Yet within a week, Ratten was sacked...

There's your answer BV
It is an issue I have wondered about as well because, apart from getting some very serious coin, MM has made some serious stipulations. It's his show now and I'm fearful the thinking is going to be too short-term. Time will tell. Hopefully not ... for our sake - and S Rogers ...!

The Jeff Kennett piece is the best thing I've read in years. Of course, Roos isn't available. Success is attainable under Malthouse, so long as he recognises that Carlton is very different to the clubs he's been at before. I don't think he understands that yet.

But the irony is delicious!

Dont care who he brings along, just get a flag (or two!), plenty of examples of old guys having a short term impact. People thought Clarkson was mad with Stewie Dew, until he kicked 3 in the GF.

Lets not be like the Bulldogs and Saints and be a good team but a player or two short of a premiership, if we can get good players now lets do it, no time to waste.

Leon Davis won't happen. We have much more talented players. We just need to harden the f up

If anyone thinks the Kennett article is at all do with Carlton, you've been sucked in.

It's about his old club Hawthorn playing Collingwood on Friday night.

Hence the use of words like "failed in 2011"... He's butthurt about the choke by the Hawks in the Prelim. Friday's a big game for the Hawks. A chance that they should take to bury the Pies and somewhat make amends for last year.

If being arguably the best H&A team all year and falling over at the very last hurdles through a combination of injury and a guy like Tom Hawkins playing the game of his life is a failed season, give me that failure over Carlton's current failed season any time!

For our club to be successful in the long term and be able to be competitive with the newer and also the stronger clubs we need to select a tough young coach who is there for the long term and develop our list accordingly.
I understand and agree with the change of coaching but the direction it takes is just as important as the change in itself.
I think Malthouse is good at binding his teams and that is what we need at the moment.
The aspect that disturbs me with the MM and apparent Cloke saga is how much of it is immediate impact and how is this going to impact the future development of the young KP's we have invested, their future at the club and the financial burden to the club.
We have a plethora of young promising KP players but in my view but are light on skilful mids for now and the future.
With Casboult, Mitchell, Watson, Henderson, McCarthy and even Hampson and Rowe we are covered for KP's for the next 10 years we need to focus on our aging list and that is mainly our mid runners.
This is were MM should focus his attention for the future of our club.
Anyone can say we should go out buy what we can and try and win a premiership but a good coach look for the long term future of a club that he thinks will be competitive for years to come.
Unfortunately I don't think MM is thinking Carltons long term future on or off the field.

Relax.

That's Kernahan's (and the boards) job.

Pretty sure they've got that totally under control.

Pretty sure they've got that from calling Mathieson and asking "WTF do I do here?"
