People keep saying that. When Malthouse went to Collingwood, they'd just won a wooden spoon and were millions in debt.
The recovery had already well and truly started under McGuire. MM drove the WC list into the ground in the late 90's and then walked out on them while still under contract. He similarly took off when things got tough at Footscray. He wants it all on a platter, and he'll probably get it again. Good coach but tremendously overrated - as overrated as Eade is underrated.
"But Rocket has never won a flag" is the cry of the great unwashed. He achieved great things with what he had at his disposal at both Sydney and the Dogs. It's all academic anyway because MM has been given the silver platter service once again.
I reckon that's harsh Sedat. I remember Leigh Matthews once saying that the key to winning a premiership was to time your acceptance of the coaching job (or something along those lines).
I reckon Eade's a beauty and I'd love to have him but it's worth acknowledging that the nouse that Malthouse has shown in timing his moves is something Eade has missed on.
And I don't reckon there's a former AFL coach out there who'd accept the idea that you could be a triple premiership coach and be "overrated".
An AFL premiership is a hard thing to win.
To win two suggests more than a bit of luck.
To win three tells me there's not a lot of luck involved.
I'm happy to debate whether Mick's still capable but to dismiss three premierships as a coach is misguided.
