Next to SOS was my favorite Carlton player after 93 when it was Tom Alvin.

Committed himself to his game to be a very good part of a very good team.

Many of the current list should pull out a video Brett Ratten highlights and learn a thing or two about commitment and selflessness and giving 100%.

Didn't work out as a coach, but not the first and not the last. Handled himself well, did his absolute best and didn't shy away from what was required.

Whether this was an immediate thing or something he'd known about for months on end, he goes out with applause in my opinion.

Not many coaches are successful, but not many are gentleman and honest citizens either.

Ratten is the latter, and should forever be welcome at Carlton.

Ratts would probably still be the coach and we would be playing finals. Seriously.

Thanks Ratt's

As always you gave your best to the Navy Blues.

With a bit of luck on the injury front the season would have been so different.

Good luck at your next club.

You will always be welcome at this one...

well done Danny boy

I have always believed that we shouldn't judge a man on how he behaves when he has it all..........judge a man by the way he behaves when he has nothing!

Ratts demonstrated what an outstanding individual he is. You cant ask more from a person than what he has given - his all!

thanks for the 24.5 years.

He didn't get screwed. He should thank his lucky stars a thousand times over that he got the chance to live the dream for 5 years.

Most assistants have racked up more experience than he for no reward at all (Bond, Royal, Cameron, Richardson et al). It didn't work out.

I wish him all the best. In fact, I hope he spends the next decade working alongside as may quality coaches as he can. You never know, maybe a few steps back over the next few years may be the making of him as a senior coach.

Who's to say we've seen the last of him at Carlton?

Sad, sad day. My heart is heavy and I know a few supporters feel the same today.
Loves the club and showed it over and over and over again.
Good luck Ratts, hope you land another senior job soon.

Sadness is the first response. No matter what the head thinks, the heart is heavy. I remember all those years ago listening on the radio as a kid made his debut. We weren’t a great team then, we were building and this kid was another block in the foundation: A kid with heart.

I remember it was a week or two later I saw him play. Didn’t look much but he got the ball. Then I watched him develop and while others were hailed as champions this kid just kept getting the ball.

Something about the way he played spoke to that little kid in me. All I ever did was go after the ball. If I had have been a footballer and lived the dream of playing for the old dark navies, I would have been happy to play like Ratts: Tough as nails, uncompromising, brave.

And as he kept playing I started to notice his skills. The way he read the play, the delivery by hand or foot. There was more to this kid than I thought. I guess there is more to each of us than anyone thinks, that’s what is so great about sport – it reminds us that none of us are just the sum of our parts, that we can be so much more.

So then he came back and coached the team. He got to live out two dreams - To play and to coach this great club of ours. No matter what happens I hope he remembers that.

So Ratts is gone as coach but that kid still lives in my memory, still wearing the number 7, getting the ball, time after time. Always in the heat of it, thriving in the congestion.

Rats is gone but we should remember that just like that kid, as a coach he was always prepared to give it a go. I was never his biggest fan, but he is a Carlton man through and through, a club champion, a premiership player and now an ex coach of this famous club, and as the song says, they can’t take that away from him.

We should also remember that it is important people try, that people have a go. Ratts had a go – that makes him a success at the things that really matter. At sticking your hand up, at wearing the heat, having passion, testing yourself and taking the whack. He did so today, he took the whack, and he took it with dignity. He is ever the Carlton champion.

Thanks Ratts, thanks for everything and good luck.

Well said totally agree
Good Luck Ratts

Best wishes Ratts.

But not if/when you coach against Carlton.

I hope he gets an assistant's gig in Melbourne rather than the Port job, might be easier for his family.

Let's not forget he has a young lad that we can pick up in 5 years

That was a great post. However you feel about his coaching Brett deserves to be recognised for his efforts in the last 5 years.

Just to clarify, the point of this thread is to thank Ratten for his service. There are numerous threads discussing the merits of his tenure, and this is not one of them. The ban hammer is well and truly out of the cabinet and will be applied liberally.

You can post a message to Ratts on the clubs website. Interesting read, lots of angry supporters and members. Many saying they will not renew memberships.

There will always be people on each side of the fence on an issue, I'm not surprised there are people saying that. Thanks for the info, but further discussion on the contents of the official website's comments are not for this thread.

Nice piece DB.

Had a similar experience. Feel the same.

Like Parkin, he may return bigger, better, wiser and more credentialled once again after the sacking, to take us to another flag.
Hope so.

Whatever happens, he's a fantastic battler who got the most out of every challenge.
He led a bunch of kids who had yet to mature.

I'm sure he's laid some good foundations for the next coach, and the kids have learned important lessons on commitment, honour, endeavour, mateship and to never say die.

Enjoy the game tomorrow Ratts and best of luck in the future.

Great Carlton man. True Carlton man.

Was bringing my son home from his bmx last night listening to the Friday night game on the radio and just talking in general.

Out of the blue he says very sincerely 'dad I prayed for Brett ratten today'. Why is that son I asked. 'Because he got sacked he is carlton and I like him'.

Still have a lump in my throat.
