Shane Rogers appears to have the right attitude when it comes to list management.

The only issue is that we have had others in the football department who think stockpiling and developing talented draftees is a bad thing.

Through numerous drafts we have traded picks away and left ourselves with only 3 or so picks in each draft while other clubs have more - they back themselves in to draft and develop the draftees.

Have a look at our 2009 draft.

Pick 12 - Lucas
Pick 43 - Davies
Pick 59 - Kerr

One player who has been on the list three years and hasn't had a game.

One who appears to lack the competitiveness or drive to keep going when their form is poor - who also lacks when it comes to kicking efficiency and on too many occasions puts in poor/soft efforts when the ball is in dispute.

One who doesn't appear to have a position at AFL level - again is a poor kick of the ball, doesn't address the deficiencies in our list (midfield/small defender/key forward), is undisciplined and has poor agility.

Have a look at Geelong's 2009 draft

Pick 17 - Menzel
Pick 28 - Duncan
Pick 40 - Christensen
Pick 42 - Vardy
Pick 56 - Cowan

They give themselves a chance by having more picks and they also draft players who put their heads over the ball and have at least adequate kicking techniques. There doesn't appear to be a major emphasis from our recruiting staff on kicking efficiency/technique - surely in today's game it is clear that kicking technique is a major factor.

We also have an issue when it comes to re-signing players to deals of 2 or more years when it is clear that they have major deficiencies in their game or have bodies which can't stand up to a full season - see Aaron Joseph's two year deal at the end of 2011. See Jarrad Waite's 3 year deal at the end of 2011. Such poor management - you would think there are amateurs in charge when it comes to major decisions about list management/contracts!!!!

Agreed, pretty much word for word but I'm thinking the lack of skills is a byproduct of our recruiting policy as a whole rather than it being neglect.

Really are these guys not allowed to have a life outside the club?

The reality is we care waaaaaaaay more than 99.9% of players about what happens on a day to day basis at any given football club. It's a business for the players full of high stress when they are there - stress to keep weight down, stay injury free, improve and perform during games.

Does it really matter that they get their hair cut and tweet about it (it's probably to get free haircuts anyway).

Well, looking at the top of the ladder having a bird as your mascot seems to be a good idea.

I thought about it and have narrowed it down to two: The Vultures or The Albatrosses.

An embracing of the draft and patience, isntead of wanting quick fixes all the time.
