The parallels with Carlton 2002 are considerable.

Brittain got Carlton to finals in 2001 with a young talented list.
In 2002 Carlton had an incredibly bad run of injuries and fell down the ladder.
Consensus at end of 2002 was that Carlton had upside and Brittain hadn't done much wrong given the hand he was dealt. Had credits in the bank from 2002.
Carlton sacks Brittain and poaches Denis Pagan.

Was it "fair" to sack Brittain on the back of the injury season from hell? NO
Is fairness a relevant consideration in the decision on a coach? NO

Carlton decided that Brittain wasn't the best guy to take Carlton forward to a flag.
They had a better option. They took it.

what u need t consider is the teams list... and ages.

that was a team over the hill... this one is not...

u can fix mindset.development etc..... but youll never fix age.

There are some parallels with now and 2002, but in 2001 we were old and talented. The injuries just led the dam wall breaking sooner than it otherwise would of.

Also we don't have the problems we had off-field in 2002, things are considerably better, though not perfect.

Malthouse has also been at multiple clubs and re-invented himself numerous times, something Pagan never did.

No guarantees it will work, but it has an infinitely better chance than when Pagan took charge.

Sorry can't agree with the "considerably better". Different problems. We're better off in some ways worse off in others.

My view....keep Ratten one more year , see how he goes. The list needs more work as Robert Walls alluded to in a non too flattering view on the Blueprint. We need to recruit to cover some holes and to we need to develop the youth we have.
I dont see a flag in 2013 and I dont llike the way MM is trying to indirectly pressure the club to sign up although the deal has already been done if you believe some sources and has been done for a while.
Roos will be available in 2014 and probably some other coaches as well......a million a year for Malthouse if rumours are correct and a 2 million dollar change over fee to sack Ratten, sign MM and assistants is way over the mark for me and if you add Travis Cloke to the deal if he signs with us for 850K plus a year then we are nearly 3 mill down in one year.
Its madness IMO and I dont see MM having the hunger and passion to win flags and is only looking for a retirement payout like Pagan was.

The club better not come rattling tins in my direction in a couple of years when they are in massive debt...

Malthouse knows he has the job......

Pagan didnt come to retire... you mean Blight???

Pagan walked into a shit club.... but noone knew it was a shit club....

And the game was changing... and our list was long in the tooth...

Daniel Harford just said on radio that his sources tell him that Ratten is meeting with the board now and has been told he will not be coaching next year. Harford says that Ratten doesnt want to coach this week and they are trying to talk him into it.
Stand by, things are happening.

I feel for him because he is a Carlton man thru and thru and a nice guy. He didn't have the tools to execute the job fully.
He had 5 years,a good list and good resources.
Nobody can say he was hard done by. 5 years for one finals win is not good enough. Danny Frawley had a better record than that.

That is a point. If the club is struggling financially should we really be bringing in Malthouse. Could we be smarter about it.

Our list is not that good. Maybe a better risk to take is to give it huge shake up. Identify the flakes. A number of our good players have a dark side. Identify them and get what we can for them.
Trade and draft smarter. We could actually save money and get better if we are clever enough.
Maybe throw a bit of cash at people that can better identify the flakes and those who have experience at putting together quality lists.

Ridiculous to throw money at Malthouse. If he has to come at least try and get him for a much cheaper price and shorter contract than the one stated.

Reckon we could be a 5 goal a game better team right off with a coach that can drill the players better and put better structures in place.

The red zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the white zone.

No, the white zone is for loading of passengers and there is no stopping in a RED zone.

The red zone has always been for loading and unloading of passengers. There's never stopping in a white zone.

Don't you tell me which zone is for loading, and which zone is for stopping!

Listen Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again.

There's just no stopping in a white zone.

Oh really, Vernon? Why pretend, we both know perfectly well what this is about. You want me to have an abortion.

It's really the only sensible thing to do, if its done safely. Therapeutically there's no danger involved.

Not circus club need to stick to their guns make sure he coaches out to end of year and then do review and then sack

better now to continue with strategy stated earlier and stick to it - club does need to respond when media suggests untruths

media will need to wait another week before assassination happens
