That is Football today. Unless you spend big it is difficult to compete with the best. Chelsea do it, so do Man U, City, and even Barcelona. Although the academy at Barcelona has produced some top quality footballers they have been complemented by expensive purchases.

Perennially disappointing Real Madrid ?? 9 European cups, 32 La Liga titles (11 more than Barcelona)
Richest in terms of annual revenues, second most valuable club in the world, coached by one of best evers.

Lets benchmark Southampton instead a club that is in administration :screwy: :screwy:

How many coaches has Real had in the last decade? Inversely proportionate to how many CL titles? So in the last decade by their standards they've been bad. They don't spend 200 mil to win domestic titles.

... And Southampton? We could talk about how they've been promoted 3 years running from league 1 to the prem. or we could go through their youth academy and look at the quality produced? And continues to? Chelsea, arsenal, man u... They all use the academy. It's widely acclaimed as the best in Europe.

cfc could learn lots from the recruiting and developing side of the Southampton youth academy. Completely ignorant to say otherwise.

What is the relevance of no of coaches ? Success is judged on the number of titles won. Pure and simple.

Who have Southampton produced of late ?

whilst we are discussing the round ball did you know it took Alex Ferguson 6 years to win his first piece of silverware and 8 years to win the premeir league

Carlton would have sacked him after 5

I would say why not for 6-700k a year for 5 years.

Fill that big ass hole in Carltons forward line. Waite never plays a full season, so would be good to have one of the best contested marks in the league when hes out.

Explain the difference, Mr. 100k?

One is a player that fills a hole in the team, which is needed. Scotland was from Pies. Don't care where we get players from to fill a hole. The other is a ex-filth coach that we dont need, but we will have knee jerk reaction over and screw over a Carlton great who has a 50% winning record in 5 years. Give him a bucket load of cash and will be gone in 2 years. Its disgusting

That's just it. Real have had a stack of coaches and not one CL title in the last decade.

A coach comes in. Spends a hundred million. Doesn't win a CL title gets fired, paid out and another is hired. Rinse repeat.

Over the years there are too many academy guys to name. The only English kids Wenger will buy are from the academy. SAF wants united to set up an academy for the north of England and use their blueprint. That was a few years ago. I don't follow Man U, but they might already have started or even done it

as i work on my Resveratrol intake and read this thread i see you guys are losing the plot: its not about southampton or Real madrid
it has to do about what we are doing: where we are drawing inspiration from and direction.
my point was, that we are looking to the magpies as a get out of jail free card because we are struggling for answers.

we are becoming a sad second rate magpies club because we are not creating the mechanics that produces greatness.

malthouse will make us competitive but we will still be pushing shit uphill to win a flag.

we don't have the infrastructure in place to really go hard.
we are now a wannabe club.

it might happen but I doubt it.
we lack the smarts and cornerstones to be anything but a club praying, crossing fingers and toes as well as deluded in believing we are a big club in the modern scheme me things.

the sad truth is the longer we are run by the current regime the harder it will be to shake the shackles of also rans.

Dick Pratt didn't hire the best CEO, he hired the best available. Pretty sure the best coach wasn't hired under his reign either. Or the best comms manager. Or the best head recruiter. Have we hired the best of anyone over the last decade?

we are not in the business of hiring the best.
we are in the business of firing or not firing mediocre people around the club.

That's about where we are.

Any chance the board will sack itself and start over with just 6 ppl? 6 ppl who don't want to dabble in the football department.

That'd be a good start?

But you're advocating getting rid of Waite, who after all is "Carlton through and through" according to every spin doctor, to get Cloke, give him a bucket load of cash and he'll be gone in 5 years.

Surely even someone like you could see the double standards here?

6? Even number boards don't work. 7's your number. I could be talked into 9 if they dumped a few sub-committee's and a bit of deadwood from the Executive.

Fair call. I dont really think of players as hires, but at his best, Judd was the best. Anyone else?

Nup.

So yeah, Pratty talked about only hiring the best, but no-one could possibly suggest he actually did it. Unless you think Swann is better than Cooke. Hughes is better than Wells/Hine. Ratts is better than premiership coaches.

Maybe one day though.
