AD was on radio this morning and when asked about this his response was that next year the first round is over the Easter break. Apparently there is a contract that Brisbane has to play on the Thursday before Good Friday. The only way that Richmond and Carlton can play on the Thursday is the week before Easter and the MCG wont be available due to the cricket.

Why can't Brisbane play someone at the GABBA and Carlton play Richmond at the MCG on the Thursday before Good Friday?

Because it is all about TV rights, this would be the simple solution otherwise. Money rules the FIXture.

Speaking of the fixture, Gold Coast and North meet twice this year, the two games just seven rounds apart. :screwy:

The AFL is planning to open the 2013 season with the Tigers and Blues on Thursday evening, March 28, on the eve of Good Friday, and will schedule the match - which has become one of the season's biggest - at the MCG, not Etihad Stadium.

I love how year after year, we get to bank 4 points away for the first game.
