Try to trade Warnock out of contract and we'll get "unders" like we got with Jacobs. Of course, that depends on what he wants to do too. By the time he's 27-28 he'll be a real gun. Some ruckmen can be late developers like that. 206cm ruckmen when developed can be like gold.

Injuries the last few years have made us happy to have extra rucks.

The only thing that makes me angry is how we got screwed for Sam by the Crows. I knew eventually he would want to go home, especially with the Crows ruck stocks taking some hits, and no doubt the club was rubbing its hands together thinking of how much currency they had up their sleeve. Then for the Crows to ream us without lube (no disrespect to McCarthy, who we somehow managed to get with that pick) when they knew full well he was worth more, it makes the blood boil if you let it. Their supporters sure as shit think he's worth a frst-rounder now.

Grigg, couldn't give less of a shit.

We were never going to get #14 from Adelaide, but a mid 20s would have been fairer at the time.
May I be bold enough to suggest had have that been able to be maneuvered, it may be quite possible we would have had Darling on the books and it may be possible that nothing would have changed with our selections anyway.
Caz will know better, but my understanding is that we were hot and cold on Darling through the course of the year, but the key tall was always going to get the first look in.

Both players left for better opportunities elsewhere and you can't blame them tbh... we have benefited from that as well.

We ended up with Laidler, Mitchell(?) and Collins

Big question now is whether Warnock will stay with a reduced contract...

Laidler already paid big dividends last year - instant impact. Collins has been an impact player, and is going to be very good indeed. Mitchell will be a good prospect if he can stay uninjured for 5 minutes. We lost a ruckman we didnt really need, and a guy who had up until the time he was traded had negligble impact for Carlton.

Its not all bad.

I don't mind collins - think he will be good for us long term and grigg was going to leave anyway *spits*

As for jacobs trade - we [REDACTED] it up - not in terms of value as I think we didnt have much choice - more that we were dropping jacobs whenever the other ruckmen were available despite solid performances in the ones. We should have given him more opportunity and personally I'd have traded warnock instead.

On what we got for jacobs -
Jacobs trade = picks 33 (mccarthy) & 67 (mcinness)

Laidler was separate though it can be argued that getting picks 33& 67 meant we could do the laidler trade
laidler trade = picks 36 (horlin-smith) & 53 (schroder) for laidler & 41 (mitchell)

Not much more to add then what already has. More of a list management issue, than a poor trade.

As I mentioned on the AFL board, Port should be feeling worse after last night then we should.

Them not entering into the negotiations meant our hands were tied re trying to get #14, rather than #33 and steak knives (like his game on Friday night though BTW!).

: peter rhode: at the time was quoted in saying that he wasn't a priority considering they already had Brogan, Lobbe, Redden and Bass at the time! 18 months later he has 61 hitouts against them, and that's after they used a 2nd round pick to add Renouf to their list last year.

Funnily enough during the 2010 trade week Cassissi was interviewed and asked what they might be looking for - and contradictory to what Rhode was preaching - said a ruckman would be a priority.

Last night game from Jacobs was very good, but the hitout count is slightly inflated by the fact that losing Tippett and McKernan early meant he went solo for pretty much 100% of the game.

Complete seperate trade.
Jacobs is a loss due to the fact he was worth more than what Adelaide paid for him. Simple.
We might or might not have done well with the draft picks, time will tell but that is not the point with this trade.
Laidler and Mitchell = pick36 & picks 53 essentially. Both players are wins and a great trade/draft for us. Fingers crossed.

Given the Jacobs trade people need to factor in Warnock's contract status when they say that they want to trade him.

Again this week has highlighted our poor efforts in trading/recruiting.

Sam Jacobs BOG
122DT 61 hitouts 5 Clearances

Shawn Grigg
123DT 35 possessions 74%DE 1 goal 3 goal assists

Could we have really not fitted theses guys into our side? Makes you wonder.

The only thing about Grigg that makes me angry is the fact that we picked him up in the first place. Overrated, one sided, bruise free and 90% meaningless stats footballer. Richmond can have him. Andrew Collins (if coached properly and given time to develop) is a better allround footballer.

The thing that annoys me with the Jacobs trade is that the club wasn't brave enough to realise that it already had three bonafide rucks on our list before it started chasing Warnock. If it had been diligent, this assessment would have been fairly obvious at the time IMO and the club shouldn't have bothered chasing Robbie for what has proven to be an inflated price.

Looking back, we overpayed for Warnock and really his output has not justified the effort and cost we put in acquiring him. We ended up losing a young ruck who has now elevated himself into one of the league's best and overtaken the guy we spent so much to acquire. And to think he now looks like packing up and moving on is even more irritating.

AFAIC, another case of poor list management and the chance to acquire some more young talent with the 2nd round pick we relinquished is an opportunity lost

Just like Brock, another Ratts obsession.

Grigg's issue was and still is his dreadful kicking action...the manner in which he drops/places the ball onto his boot is dreadful.

This is what the 2007 Champion Data Prospectus had to say about Grigg

Quote:
The only major deficiency evident in his game is his kicking. In 2006 his average of three clanger kicks per game was easily the most of any TAC Cup player or any 2006 draftee

Given it is so hard to change a player's kicking technique it's surprising he was drafted that early - although he was one of a number of players we've taken over the past 5-7 years who have had flawed kicking techniques when it was clear with the way the game was going that kicking ability/technique should rate highly.

Jacobs is one of a number of players like Tom Rockliff who were left out/taken late because they are genuine footballers.

Sick of revisiting Jacobs, he wanted to go back to Adelaide.

Unless the Club was relocating we weren't going to keep him.

As Gavstar22 said, Jacobs wanted out, we had no choice in the matter basically
