What we have is a dodgy list.

Seems like Hughes is taking the fall and it might be right but I'm sure he doesn't work in a bubble and if he does there's a few people in there with him.

McLean? Warnock?

These two look like the kind of players a coach would ask a recruiter to target.

We know Judd isn't a Hughes recruit he's a Pratt recruit.

Hughes may be incompetent but I'd say it's just as likely he just a soldier following orders.

I hope if Malthouse comes, we go very hard after Derek Hine. They are close friends and you never know.

I'm only guessing but I don't think he'd have much to do with trades except maybe to give his assessment of the value of a particular draft pick that might be used. As for his drafting he's had a few hits and a few misses but development plays a big role as well. Probably deserves a bit of criticism for the relative lack of pure mids and tall forwards on the list but he's already handed the job over to Rogers anyway.

Fev & Brock trades.

Fev was great move, macleans a shocker.

Tonight's game shows Fev is still one of the best marking forwards in the game even when fat. Rookie draft him at the end of year & stick him in the goal square. Does seem to have grown up somewhat finally.

Great research to overlook Eddie Betts and Jordan Russell who are two Hughes' picks and senior players who reached 100 games.

Useless chart unless you can show us Hine's and Wells' rankings for the same drafts. It wouldn't be hard for Mark Stevens to dig up the CollingwoodFC interview where Hine stated that Hampson was the next pick if Nathan Brown was gone. I guess that's a tick for Hampson if he was on Collingwood's radar. And Grigg is holding his own at Richmond. :sly: :donk:

Betts was an accident...

We wanted Knobel.

So if our list is so bad, did Ratts actually do a brilliant job to get us as far as we did last year?

Development of those players?

2007 and 2009 we don't give ourselves much of a chance with only three picks.

We only had injuries to fringe players last year which didn't have much impact to our performances.

Where we went wrong was giving more kids a taste, thus creating depth.

I think it is a bit simpilstic to classify the likes of Grigg, Hampson and Bower as draft failures.
Sure they haven't set the world on fire but if you look at who was picked after them they weren't bad selections at all.
Ditto Jordan Russell who had the likes of Chris Egan, Danny Meyer and another player (forgot his name) taken after him who have all since been delisted.
Journalists should really do a bit more homework IMO.

Some kids getting games this year, unlikely will have such an injury crisis to key players that knocks them out together for weeks. 2-3 key players OK but not eight.
Will have a more favourable draw next year too if everything continues to go to the crapper. Need to have a good year in trade & draft.

If you had done this list 6 weeks ago Hampson, Gibbs and maybe Krooz might have had ticks. Nobody was to know when we drafted Krooz that he was going to tear an ACL, miss 12 months of footy and then need to get his knee drained every week just to take the field. I know every team has injuries but a rising tide lifts all boats. Amazing how some of the duds would become studs if we won a few games!

What gets me is the lack of any replacement for Fev/Waite. Obviously Kennedy was the guy but we traded him for Judd. 2010 we drafted some talls but they have yet to be seen, aside from Watson in Defence. Every player over about 184cm seems to get drafted and part of their welcome pack includes a hat, a polo shirt and a shoulder reco!

I have said it before but it is almost impossible to judge the playing group given the current coaching and development. Who knows how good they can be?

When Ratten was appointed I made the comment what a mistake it was putting a young coach with a young list. It is a recipe for disaster especially given that problems we have had for over 10 years. I seriously believe GC are suffering the same issues.

A new coach with a consistent message, genuine leadership qualities and the ability to get the best out of most players will make a real difference to our playing list.
