So they are needed to fill the key posts while Waite, Henderson, Rowe and Casboult are injured. Thornton is the only other option but he himself is the 3rd tall-type. I'm not sure what else we can realistically do under the circumstances.

That's my point, our rucks are playing in the KPF positions out of necessity, not because they are forwards. Unfortunately, it's never going to work. So given the lack of available key forward options, the rucks' inability to play as key forwards, what else could we do?
The only thing I can think of would be to go with three smalls like Betts, Garlett and Collins, a third forward like Thornton and a leadup forward like Walker and one of Hampson/Kreuzer out of necessity to provide a bigger body. Not ideal but we don't have many options to throw around at the moment. Something like that might be worth a shot...
