I would probably go a bit harder on regenerating the list based on the following:
The following players won't be around in 3 years based on a hypothetical age barrier if kept: Carrazzo, Judd, Simpson, Waite, Scotland, Thornton, Duigan, Russell, McLean
We will be left with a senior group of: Walker, Betts, Jamison, Warnock/Hampson, Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer, Laidler
The current state of our list has the following yet to play a game at AFL level: Buckley, Casboult, Dale, McCarthy, McInness, Bell, Bray, Carter, Lodge, Heyne, Kerr, Mitchell, Rowe, RoK (1 game)
That's potentially 23 of our current list that could be turned over in the next 3 years due to age or lack of opportunity.
So how to address it? I would start with a huge cull this year:
Delist: Lodge, Bell, Bray, Heyne, Carter, Kerr, McLean, White Trade (If any takers) / Delist (If no takers): Thornton, Bower, Russell, AJ (Even if contracted), Davies, Curnow Trade (If any takers) /Keep (If no takers):: Warnock, Hampson, Garlett
That would leave a list as follows:
Mids: Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Carrazzo, Simpson, Lucas, Ellard, RoK, Robinson, Scotland, Collins Rucks: Kreuzer, Warnock/Hampson (Whoever is kept) Forwards: Mitchell, Waite, Betts, Garlett, Buckley (Initially), Dale, Armfield Defenders: Jamison, Watson, Laidler, Tuohy, McCarthy, McInnes, Duigan, Bootsma Hybrids: Henderson (KPF/KPD), Casboult (Forward/Ruck), Rowe (Forward/Ruck), Yarran, Walker
My thoughts would be to implement the 1 traditional ruck + hybrid model, so this makes a Hammer/Warnock trade ideal and gives us another late 1st or 2nd rounder at worst, which we can use a rookie pick to take a young up and comer, ala Sammy Jacobs. Casboult/Rowe/Mitchell would need to be persevered with as the second ruck. It was interesting hearing Malthouse talk about the 3 tall system at Collingwood in the forward line, and how they play better using this system (Dawes, Cloke, Payne), no reason we can't do the same.
I would focus heavily on midfielders, especially with our first pick and rookie selections. We can do worse than our own backyard at Northern Blues for rookie picks here. Tough ball winners a priority.
Any other pick, Key Position players, no more 190cm flankers who can't play a key position or as a midfielder (on-ball).
The list would be left with minimal exposed depth, but that's the fault of our existing system. The opportunity will now arise to give these kids who haven't played the opportunity and incentive to really develop and earn a best 22 spot.
The bottom line is we have 3-5 years to bring through our future whilst making the most of winning a flag with our existing senior core, if the club doesn't have a succession plan for our senior group we're stuffed as it will take 2-3 years for any recruits this year to start sharing some load, we also need players recruited in the next two years to be ready to take over from the next tier like Murphy who have 5-6 years left also.
I may not be so great at explaining it, but we really aren't in a strong position for sustained success from what I see today. As others have alluded too, we've planned for the Judd era.
PS: DO NOT get Cloke.
