As you know I go back a fair way but the Ratten sides of the last 3 years remind me of an earlier era in the mid to late 70s coached by Thorogood where we played finals had a lot of talent but ultimately didnt have character mental strength or grunt to go to the top
Players cruised on talent alone but could never bridge the gap with the better sides because apart from talent didn't have the other various intangibles that a great side needed
Ultimately Thoro was shown the door because the side continually couldn't come up with the goods -made the finals but didn't have the hard edge
In particular during a couple of seasons Thoro sides would always be beaten in the wet because games in the wet required a lot more than just talent
Our present side seems to lose quite often especially this year where games need more than pure talent
They lost the finals in 2009 2010 when they were in front and should have gusted it out we now lose to sides that apply physical pressure -talent alone won't win you enough games
Ratts may get more grace than Thoro but the similarities are apparent
Anyone agree

Completely. I said EXACTLY that to some people last night. Eerilly similar - onfield. But, the club itself reminds me more of 1964.

BTW Frank, if you want my take on the 1970s and the Thorogood era, check out http://fromthemoshpit.com/2011/04/04/living-in-the-seventies/.

Who is to say that Malthouse or Roos wouldnt become Pagan MKII

Freo list is in a similar shape to ours and they are sucking big time uner Lyon

Melbourne list was supposed to have more upside sucking big time

Norths list about the same as ours

Doggies ???

Dont know if Ratts is the right man but I dont want to see us go down the Pagan track again

Synners I think we need to give it to the end of the season and give him that time
Obviously if it continues as it has for the last 7 weeks then I suspect we need a drastic change but we really need to get it right if we pull the trigger ie get a Malthouse or Roos
Having said that if by some miracle we improve drastically and its difficult to see that happening now but we make a PF then I suspect he will get to coach out the final year of his contract

Looking backwards wont help. The AFL today is a world apart from the 70's.

Ratten got the team playing gun football earlier in the year reckon he deserves a chance to repeat it. If he does, we will be close to unstoppable and prefer if it was towards end of season and peak then. But needs so start fairly soon

Agree Sydney I'm just using Roos and Malthouse as examples there maybe a better young coach out there ie similar to Scott or Clarkson (who I Despise ) and that is why the club must make a very careful considered and astute judgment if it decides to change coach
I'm not close enough to determine who will be the next great young coach I just know the other 2 have had success
As for Lyon I think he is a good coach and I reckon he teaches more than just talent
Those Stkilda sides that made those grand finals were not extremely talented but won a hell of a lot of games on the basis of things other than talent

All other teams already know how to stop this "gun football" you speak of, time for a new type of gun.

We need Carrots in good form taking out their best ball player no one elese in the squad is disciplined and determined enough... Joseph either needs time or needs to be traded; need alot of things going right for us, because our brand of football is exhilirating winning football. Need to start run and spreading more, it has totally stopped...I think we will see incremental improvement in the team week by week as key players return to the squad and gain match fitness.

When Carrots comes back.... i can visualise Ratten saying "Youve just cost me my job!!!" to him.

You making our Carrots sounds like he is Ablett.

He isnt... he is an extremely limited footballer... who tries...!!!

This is not a game of kurplonk .. where u pull out one straw and the marbles come tumbling down.

The whole point of a gameplan and a team is to protect the individual weaknesses and strengthen with the vastly larger body of people.

Incremental, is this the same as the incremental improvement we made from 2009 to 2011, whilst a team we beat by 12 goals in last years final series has incrementally improved past us at around Warp 7.

Dear J.Scarponi,
Your absolute support in Ratten & the team overral needs to be applauded.
While others like myself have totally lost confidence in everything Navy Blue, you sir are vigilent in your beliefs.
I will try and remember your fight in here in a few months time and if we are where you think we might be, then you sir deserve our respect and apologies.
Regards
SurreyBlue!
