I've been wondering about this for a while.

When we're in space we look really good.

When we're in the middle of a pack we struggle.

We have one of the tallest rucks in the league who consistently gets first hands on the ball.

Why are we tapping the ball straight down into the pack?

Belt the @#$%&! thing into space and play to our strengths.

I'm happy for someone to explain why this won't work.

Alistair Lynch said something very similar on AFL Insider. He was talking about it in relation to the Dockers not getting value from Sandilands dominance.

Said the Brizzy Lions used it to great effect a decade ago.

Don't have to do it every stoppage, but it would certainly be a something we can do. I think it could be used to great effect forward of centre.

I've seen Sandi just stand there and smash the ball 30-50m towards goal. That's a kick's worth of distance, but then puts pressure on a 50/50 loose ball get which we are shite at.

I would hope that if we were to work it into our game we might make it so we have better chance of getting the loose ball than 50/50

Did this against the pies and it worked well. Since then a ruckman would have to belt it 40m to find any space around our congested stoppages. We are better off embracing the congestion and getting better at playing through it.

Can't we do both and use "the element of surprise"?

I remember watching Carlton ruckmen of days gone by holding their fingers behind their backs so the crumbers would know where the ball was going to go.
