Problem is above the shoulders, in this case intensity or lack of it. After the Essendon* debacle we had a great win in the West. I'm guessing we'll up and win comfortably as i'm guessing intensity will be very high. If we're switched on, we win as we are better than they are.

Thornton comes in and plays forward with Waite to provide an extra marking option.

AJ, Duigan and Gartlett out.
Thornton, Yarran and Lucas in.

More time for Gibbs, or even Yarran forward with Garlett out.

Hey jim,
Can I buy a bit of your brain for the week please?

I sincerely hope Richardson was playing his cards close to his chest on insider tonight. Seemed to have very little idea how to address our clearances/stoppages issue.

Here's a hint for Richardson -
1. get our ruckman to tap the ball to our advantage and not to StKilda midfield. I lost count how many times Kruezer tapped it to the saints advantage.
2. get atleast one of our midfielders to stand defensive side at centre bounces atleast to show we care!
3. shepherd, block and talk.

ps. Hate to think what Jacobs is going to do to us on Sunday.

I note everyone is including Yarran in this week's side.

Has it been confirmed anywhere that he is definitely fit for this game?

He was listed as "test" last week which can sometimes (in Carlton-speak) mean 3-4 weeks.

Ratts told us we were focussing on our clearances after GWS

Like to see us get balance and selection right this week.

My choice:

B: Armfield Henderson Jamison
HB: Yarran Waite Gibbs Scotland

C: Simpson Tuohy Robinson
Foll: Kruezer Judd Murphy

HF: Garlett Thornton
F: Betts Hampson Walker

Int: Lucas Ellard Collins (Duigan)

Time to get Touhy around the ball and protect Murphy and Judd. Could just follow Thompson.
Tighten up defence and create run with Yarran, Gibbs, Armfield and Scotland
Duigan off the sub to make an impact later.
Waite to defence to help out and work third man up.
Thornton and Ruckman as falls up forward at Etihad surrounded by Walker and Smalls.
Henderson on Tippett

Garlett and Armfield lucky as no one else to bring in! Like to see Bootsma, McCarthy, Dale, Watson and Buckley start to put pressure on.

Waite to HB? Haven't we already been down this road before?
Waite has been good at HF this year except for Monday night ...

FWIW Ratten said Yarran was definitely in this week.

I dont know about this one... I thought the Essendon* game was just a one off, and that we d learn fom that.
However last night, and the lazy attitude against GWS, has left me wondering if we ve improved as a team at all this year.

In such an open year in terms of winning the flag, Id hate if teams like Adelaide, Sydney and Essendon* move past us and grab spots in the Top 4.
If ever there was an EIGHT point game, and a chance for us to make a statement that we are a legit top team, and we will not allow the opposition to beat us up, this Sunday is the perfect opportunity to show the Crows and the AFL world that we re still right in the mix for the flag.
The fallout from a loss, especially if we go down witha wimper like we did against Essendon* and St Kilda, would be MASSIVE!!!!

Good post and I have been wondering the same regarding improvement.

Might come up with a drinking game for this round.

Drink every time we win the tap but it doesn't go to advantage.
Drink every time we turn the ball over inside fifty.
Penalty drink if the ball is rebounded straight back down for a goal.
etc

McLean on the inside.
Judd on the outside of him not the other way around.
Walker in the midfield
Jameson and Waite swapped around. but Jameson full forward and Thornton centre half forward.
Waite and Henderson making it a faster backline.

yarran and Irish the deep sweepers for the opposition breaks.

no hard press.

midfield added grunt.

should be much more balanced set up for what's going on.

Waite can't stay lazy!

Jameson will provide some kind of target without the bells and whistles.

I normally chuckle to myself whenever i read one of your pessimistic posts. But I have to agree with you on this Synners. We NEED to try something, because clearly our plan is not working.

However, our MC likes to do the same thing week in, week out, and just hope for the best. So it probably won't happen.

oh and stop this reactive stuff.

only one run with. army!

having a few means we go where they take up.

we need to wrestle back the initiative.

a midfield of Brock inside crashing and bashing with Judd Walker and Murphy has more muscle.

Simmo and Scotland outside of them.

we won't be allowed to spread anymore the same way so neither does Brock

I would play bower ahead of Duigan at this stage. I wouldn't play both if i was selecting though. Nothing to do with their form but i think we need better, cleaner, faster players at ground level in our backline. Jamo and Henda can cover the arial stuff. Surround them with Scotland, Gibbs, Touhy, Yaz, Russ (if in form) and Laidler when fit.

As it stands now if the ball hits the ground we are stuffed. Too lumbery. If we get hit on the counter (major tactic used against us) we are too slow to keep up with them.

Out Duigan, Bower, AJ
In Yaz Collins/Lucas Thornton

Gibbs to play back and stay back with Yaz confusing the opposition with great defending, rebound and cutting off the counter attacks.
Thornton to play swingman until being subbed off for run late in the game.
Everyone else to stay with the original 2012 plan but play with desire and intensity. Engaging in the arm wrestle if the Crows go the clog around the ball. Win it a different way. The game will open up at times and when that happen capitalise.
Tighten up the team defensively around stoppages. Do not let the ball out on their terms. Might sound too defensive but we have to get back to basics and limit score against. Make it hard for the Crows to play against us. Go all Ross Lyon on them. They like it free flowing as much as we do.
No shallow entries. Move it a spot on the ground where we can get it in deep . Press up and play it in our half. It saps the life out of teams. The bombers used the press to great effect against the eagles who have also used it to great effect the last two years. Keep some speed outside for better cover for the counter attacks.

Lift Blues !! Use the last month as a valuable lesson from the coaches box down through the list.
