Result didnt suprise me.
Have gone backwards since last year
Nobody to bring into the team.
Can get our hands on the ball
No forwards you can provide a contest in the air.

Our coach isnt up to it
bein saying it for years

Waite gets a 3 year deal. Always been a flaky footballer. Overrated. Tonight played from behind too much.

Gibbs Watched him closely. Played as the loose man in defence . Did @#$%&! all there then on the ball after that.Simply didnt want it.

As I said no intensity, no pace and no balls.

He isnt as good as people think. Big fish in a small pond syndrome.
Being saying it for years
He is going down the Travis Johnstone road of average.

trade him for a harder mid and a guy who can take a contested grab in the forward line.

Melbourne traded Johnstone when it was all too late.

Ratten didnt have plan b . Not good enough.

Essendon* exposed us as a bunch of front runners

Some bad decisions people.
If tough decisions arnt made at the end of this season that I have been advocating for a few years we wont come near the flag for a very long time.
The last month tells the tale.

Bottom line and number one problem. If you cant get your hands on the footy because your soft your not good enough.

The sad thing for me is I thought this would happen tonight.

Ellard has to start in the middle in every game

I really don't know where this team is going. When we click, I think we are the best team in the league. However, as many have stated, only if we are allowed to play a certain game style. The rest of the league is too smart to allow this to happen on a regular basis. This is where the coaching staff should make a difference. Last night we were found out again in this area. For us to succeed, when struggling we need to come up with other options during games eg Waite had a stinker last night, why not swap him with Hendo. We have become too predictable. Believe it or not but we do get our hands on the ball. However, our entries into the 50 metre area have been haphazard with no real purpose. Hammer appears to have improved so why not come up with a different strategy to utilise him more effectively. I could go on but relying on individual brilliance will not win us a premiership.

Really liked the games of Hammer, Judd and Betts.
Robbo good as well, although he's clearly been instructed to handball as first option, and a couple of times this slowed down our ball movement unnecessarily.
Good to see Gibbs get some time in midfield. Looked like he struggled a little with the intensity in the contest. That's the problem when you play loose out in space all the time.
Those late goals in quarters just kill you. Should have been in front at quarter time. Should have been close at half time. Three of them were absolutely diabolical pieces of defence.

I see AJ more as a Clint Jones type run with negating player rather than a small defender - got torched last night as a small defender - should've been moved up the ground much earlier - they'll probably have his papers stamped by now

This has been obvious for 3 years ...

Sides are starting to look very confident for the contest against us

Look the Saints were brilliant last night.
Its the first time they have looked brilliant in a year and a half.

They will probably go back to looking like bananas.

Clubs can sniff us out as vulnerable if they play a certain way.

Its going to be hard from now on in

Agree with this. The 2 biggest holes in the list are obviously a big bodied fwd & a strong bodied mid - we rely far too much on pace & clean ball. When the opposition makes it a scramble where's our lenny Hayes or Jordan Lewis type midfielder. And they're exactly the problems you don't want in September against strong sides.

That strong bodied mid we are crying out for got traded to Richmond!!

Teams have worked out when they stop us at the source we are stuffed. THe congest the space around the stoppages so we cant run it like we want to. From there if we do get it out its slow and all wrong which is stuffing up our entries. Coming in at wrong pace and too shallow. This takes eddie and garltett away from the way they want to play.
From there we start commiting more guys around the contest to get it moving or we start taking more risks to break the congestion and that leaves us easy to score against. Especially when our backline is packed with tall or lumbery players playing against zippy smalls.

On a brighter note we didnt look too bad against these tactics when we decided to turn up the pressure and effort in the 3rd and at times in the first. Perhaps a bit more effort and intensity is enough to beat the negative tactics opposition are using against us.

And we need to get our touch back. Far too fumbly. Loads of players out of form.

We can turn it around but it is going to take hard work.

A rejig of the lineup and the way we play. Doesnt have to be drastic as that would be stupid this time of the year but enough to try and give us a different look and tactics that make us hard to play against.

No Rhys he wanted to go because his bottom live quivered when he was asked to play in the VFL to get some form and fitness and to play in a certain way. Get your facts straight.

Grigg left the club and is starting to improve and become a more rounded team contrubuter.

One thing is for sure.

This club is treading water.
Its relying on organic development.
Players reach a certain level and bump goes their head on the glass ceiling.

Nobody crashes through it.

Yes players do ok for a bit then they just regress.

There is something seriously wrong at the club.

Sticks said "3 flags in 5 years " without telling us how.

Personally , i cant see us winning a flag going forward with Sticks and Ratten at the club.

There is nothing special in the modern world about my club anymore.

There is nothing cutting edge... as a matter of fact were average in most areas .
Yet people believe with everything about us that is average... somehow we WILL win a flag.

Average president
Average coach
Average turnover
Average membership
Average inovation
Average recruitment
Average development

Very hard to watch last night but a reality check.

A couple of glaring issues for me:

1. Our size around the ball. We simply don't have the bigger bodies especially around the stoppages. Guys like Hayes just bump us aside. This has been an issue for a while and is not an easy fix.

2. Our depth is extremely poor. We have some of the elite in the AFL but we fall away badly. If our best don't perform we are in trouble.

3. Although it wouldn't of changed the result the dropping of Thornton has me perplexed. That workhorse type player around the forward 50 is vital. It takes pressure off Waite, Walker and brings smalls into play.

IMO these guys aren't up to it:

Curnow (slow and not as hard as people think), AJ (not a BP), Russell (why is he ever picked?), Bower (disposal).

I have questions on Armfield, Henderson & Duigan.

We will be better with Lucas, Thornton, Yarran, Laidler, Carrazzo in the side.

If we could just get a Hayes, Boyd, Watson, Swan (or 2) type! :yikes:

Got on StKilda @ $4.25.

I'm actually gonna load it all up on Adelaide this week.

Why?.............................................because we are carrying passengers, yet again. And some of them aren't on the ground....... they're runing the show.

Ratten has shown nothing new. I feel he is just plodding along thinking that we are worthy of winning a premiership but not knowing how to actually win one.
The likes of Russell / Joeseph / Gibbs / Armfield and others need to pull their !@#$%& heads in. Stop playing like millionaires. Your not! Your average players at best.

Pfft............. we're premiership favourites????? Whatever!

How dare you criticise Gibbs. There are some on this site who'll tell you he can be an elite midfielder if Ratts played him as one. At the moment (read the last 4 years), Ratts has required him to marshall the troops down back. And then there's Paul "he played his best game in 2 years against a TAC squad" Bower. Dropping Thornton was a stupid move. Don't give a stuff about matchups. He provides more flexibity than Bower anyway

Tonight's game was an opportunity to refocus the season after three shithouse weeks of football. Pretenders is all we are. Still can't string more than 4 consecutive wins under Ratten

But hey, we'll make a statement against Adelaide won't we

Well it seems we may have made anohter super recruitment blunder with Watson McCarthy Mitchell and no mids in there...can understand the thinking at the time. Hindsight says it was a blunder of perhaps epic proportions. 1 of them at least should be treading 20 games now I would have thought. Apart from the potential of Bell we have nothing coming through from NB - that hurts the most.

Defenders always look better when the guys up the ground are doing their job.

Only a short few years ago teams saw playing us as a 'bye' now they 'lift' to play us. Now that is a compliment. Its something as team we have to get used to and we will.

I was worried as soon as he went to him. His record on small forwards is poor. He gets turned inside out too easily and he reads the ball poorly in the air. AJ was a ball winning running player as a junior. He is NOT a defender.
