Those issues with our forward entries coming from too far out are there. Cant really get it in deep enough to get the press going as Ratts said was the plan. Maybe a result of no run maybe a result of teams working us out or maybe we tweaked our game a little to be not so reliant on smashing teams at the clearances.

Dont know the stats but we probably miss Yarran's run through the middle and some of his kicking deep into the forward 50 - but this would only explain the last few games.

Carrazzo's work around the stoppages since Round 4 would explain some of it as well.

Interested to hear peoples thoughts on Thornton's standing in the team. I for one have done a complete 360 in my opinion on him (as I have with D Armfield).

The fact that he is no longer that no. 1 defender in a team that was getting flogged week in week out has done wonders for his confidence and it shows in his general demeanour on the ground. Body language much much better than it was back in those days.

He is the only true player that we can AFFORD to have do a job at either end when need be. (Waite can play in the backline but why would we do that, and Henderson can play forward but right now the more games he plays settled in defence, the better for his own confidence and long term worth to the team). Ratten talks about the need for players to be versatile and play in multiple for positions. For the most part I think its a rubbish thing to say because each player performs better in one specific position over another, however his comments make sense when injuries occur etc etc. I actually think Thornton is the one exception to this though.

As a forward, Thornton clearly gives us another important marking option down there, which we know we are thin on. Waite, resting ruck when he's not on the bench, and Walker as quasi-tall down there isn't enough and doesn't cause too much discomfort for opposition defences in terms of their own KPDs needing to match up. Thornton is the man to exploit matchups in our forward line and if not for himself then at least maybe he takes away a better defender from Walker.

He can mark over his head quite comfortably and is a decent set shot. Having said all this, his defensive pressure is where he leaves abit to be desired and needs to improve.

As we know, IF need be he can do a job in defence.

People knock him for his short pass 'sideways' game. I actually think he's one of the better kicks in the team for spotting up passes under 30m and to me it just shows he understands what tempo football means. Slowing things down can be just as important as all out attack if its an appropriate time in the game for it. Gibbs understands this too. Not everyone can and/or needs to be a linebreaker.

I don't think it necessarily comes down to a Thornton v Bower debate for a spot in the team. But if it does, would take Thornton every day of the week for the versatility he offers. Bower was great yesterday but his position is easily replaced by a Laidler, Duigan, Tuohy and even Russell :yikes: .

In a team light on with senior players, he at least brings experience to the table (almost notched up the 200 games) if not leadership.

We are not dealing with the pre 2011 Bret Thornton anymore, he is an entirely different proposition now.

Trust me I never ever ever thought I'd be saying this. Ever. But the guy needs to play each week from hereon in.

Great work Dook's.Thats one of the best posts i have read on this sight in a long time.Thornton, for mine,is unbelievable value for all the reasons you have stated. We are crying out for a big CHF,but as we dont have one,Thornton coz of his ariel ability is gold.

PS...........i have always been a fan.But i reckon Bower is far better than people think and i reckon he is also a must given his ability to close down power forwards(check Bowers record against the likes of Cloke,Reiwoldt,Kennedy......very impressive.)

In: Judd, Curnow, Waite, Yarran
Out: Duigan, Joseph, Ellard, Thornton

for mine. Although I expect Joseph to be retained ahead of Bootsma.

Who makes way for Judd, Waite, Yarran & Curnow? (personally I'm not convinced that Curnow should be considered an automatic inclusion, but I get the impression the MC will bring him straight back in)...

AJ Jamo Bower
Duigan Hendo Yarran
Simmo Judd Scotland
Garlett Waite Robbo
Betts Hammer Tex

Kreuzer Gibbs Murphy
Inter: Curnow Lucas Tuohy
Sub: Ellard

IN: Curnow, Judd, Waite, Yarran
OUT: Armfield, Bootsma, Russell, T-Bird

T-Bird very unlucky, but I think we need to drop a tall to make way for Waite. Bower could be the other option, but he would be equally as unlucky.

Armfield looks to me like he could do with a rest or a spell in the VFL to rediscover his intensity/hunger. To be fair, he might still be struggling with his knee injury - but he's a player that really cannot afford any drop-off in his intensity. I thought he was ordinary vs GWS. Perhaps a chance to be Sub? (at the expense of Ellard or maybe Duigan comes out of the side? - depends on match-ups)...

Russell had an OK game on Sunday, but it wasn't the sort of performance that cements him in the team, IMO. I'm not sure there's room for JR, Duigan, Tuohy & Yarran in the same side at the moment. Duigan isn't in form, but I get the impression the MC will persist with him over JR. Tuohy wouldn't want too many games like the one he had vs GWS, but I'd back him to bounce back this week. JR unlucky.

Bootsma will have good memories of his first game. I hope he takes the experience back to the VFL and it accelerates his development. Give the kid time. Lots of time.

Good line up Aboynamedsue. I would make one change though and leave out Duigan. I think Bower takes his spot. Having him and Bower is overkill not needed. Id include Armfield for a run with job if his knee is ok.

AJ Jamo Bower
Gibbs Hendo Yarran
Simmo Judd Scotland
Garlett Waite Robbo
Betts Hammer Tex

Kreuzer Murphy Curnow
Inter: Lucas Tuohy Armfield
Sub: Russell

Some good players miss out. T Bird is good forward and Ellards 10 tackles might be hard to replace but someone has to miss and the ball came out of packs on their terms too easy last sunday. Curnow should see to that not happening again.

Fair point about Ellard. He might have to make way for Armfield in my side. Armfield's run and spread could come in handy against the Saints, perhaps as the Sub? (assuming his knee is OK)...I like Armfield in that defensive forward role when he's playing well - he's quick and tackles hard. I'm just a little concerned about him since he came back from injury.

Really there's a number of decent players that are no certainty to be picked this week - Ellard, Armfield, JR, Duigan, AJ, Tuohy, Lucas, T-Bird - should make for a good week on the training track....

Armfield is an important ingredient in our team: Express pace.
Yarran's got it, and so has Garlett.
Judd and Murphy have everything in spades.

If Army needs a break the MC could take that opportunity this week with Judd Yarran and Curnow coming in.

I agree.

Ratts did sound adamant that there would be Judd Yarran and Curnow cpming in.
I don't recall him saying Waite would. Did he state Waite's a certainty?

So at least 2 of the above would be dropped along with "Boots".

If Waite comes in we have the luxury of keeping either TBird or Bower.

I really liked Bower showing the world what he's about with that running goal.
Imagine if he played wing and broke a couple of lines and has a shot: brazen as they come if you ask me.
Bower and TBird are both versatile imo given the opportunity. Both look in form atm.

Duigan Jamison Bower
Russell Henderson Yarran
Gibbs Curnow Simpson
Walker Waite Garlett
Hampson Thornton Betts
Kruezer Judd Murphy
Robinson Scotland Lucas Tuohy

Out: Joseph Bootsma Ellard Armfield(inj)

I think Robinson might need a rest. (sub?)

A tall will go for Waite. Boots for Judd, close your eyes and pick a name for Yarran and Curnow (who Ratts indicated will be back in).

Of selection, is the squad of 25 announced Friday and cut Saturday?

From the players available I really like this team, I would probably swap JR for AJ this week for the tiprat but otherwise I would have JR in hoping he continues to improve, I think continuity really helps players build momentum but I just think AJ has a good shutdown record.

If they go with JR, who would they play on Milne?? I think Touhy is not yet up to it!

I dont think Duigan is required in that backline. Makes it a bit lumbery. Could slot AJ there for Milne.............
.... and whether we like it or not Gibbs in the backline will help us win the game. He has been a big player in that postion in all our 5 wins this year. re watch the tapes...even last week we looked a million times better when he moved from on ball to back half. He is having a big year. Play the percentages.

Would like to see Tuohy & Duigan persited with and Yarran pushed on the wing. We have a few players out of form since the Essendon* game and need a decent shot in the arm hopefully it's this week!

Agreed. Maybe a run for the Northern Blues will make Judd think twice about resting next time.

I'd definitely give Russell another gig and maybe ahead of Duigan.

Russell made everyone groan on Sunday but he also put in a massive contested effort.

If it's IN: Waite, Judd, Yarran, Curnow
then for me it's OUT: Thornton, Duigan, Bootsma, Armfield (inj)

Russell, Jamison, Bower
Yarran, Henderson, Tuohy,
Simpson, Gibbs, Scotland
Robinson, Waite, Garlett
Walker, Hampson, Betts
Kreuzer, Judd, Murphy
IC:Lucas, Curnow, Ellard, Joseph.

I've changed my mind, I don't want the Tiprat held goalless, I want someone to crush his ugly little rat head.

Is this where I complain about the Monday night fixture?
I hate it.
