I know a lot of people were expecting a 20 goal shellacking (including me) but GWS may not provide as many of those as many of us have expected.

So far their results are as follows:

63 to Sydney
129 to North
81 to West Coast
46 to Adelaide
42 to Dogs
67 to Carlton

It might have been nice to bank a little more percentage but their average losing margin is 71 points so far.

It wasn't a great game for us but we haven't really lost anything and if this keeps a lid on things and the coaching and playing groups focused on what still needs improving then I'd actually prefer that than a spanking which papers over the cracks.

So nice to see the warmth and affection shown by the boys toward Santy.
Hopefully it puts to bed any talk f him not being liked by his team mates.

The next four games are all winnable. The next two weeks are the hardest of those four. St Kilda will put up a fight (although no ruckman and no Fisher hurts them badly).

Adelaide I think are the biggest chance of beating us over the next 4 games and with just a 6 day break for us. Hopefully Geelong beat them up next weekend.

This is true, but it seems that Sydney and West Coast have overcome that problem by beating GWS by a similar amount.
Essendon* seem to have got on top of the problem of just scraping home against GC, also.

There is really nothing more to take from this game than the four points and to now get serious.

Yep, it's out of my system now; move on to the Saints.

Having abit of a mental release is not a bad thing in a tough competition where the difference between a win and a loss is mostly between the ears. Think big picture stuff rather than being the school yard bully.

The team brought practice match intensity and that's more than enough to account for GWS at this stage so I don't mind them coasting through the match at all provided they're able to fire up for the Saints.

Can't help agreeing with you Caz.

I am fine with the win, we got through an average game with a 10 goal margin. It is not possible to go through the whole season with high intensity and it is better that we build up for the upcoming matches against Geelong and WCE over the 5 weeks where we are against opposition that we are expected to win against.

It can also not be expected that every player will play well every week, yet that is some peoples' expectation.

It may be an old cliche but the season is a marathon and we need to time our sprint in September. Some times a low key churn through a weaker oppostion sets us for the bigger picture goal.

You also have to look at the teams both GWS and their opponent had on those days
Mind you it was not GWS strongest line up yesterday
Sheedy has been swinging several changes every week
Swans , Dogs , North and Crows were at full strength
WC left out Glass and Priddas
We went in without Judd Waite Yarren Curnow

Hammer "I think we got a bit complacent"
Quote:
CARLTON ruckman Shaun Hampson admits the Blues were guilty of complacency in Sunday's win over lowly Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium.

Carlton, who left out several stars including captain Chris Judd, ended up winning by 67 points, but were only 10 points clear at the main break.

Hampson says it took some strong words from coach Brett Ratten at half-time to rouse them into top gear.

"We weren't happy at all with our first half," Hampson said on Monday.

"I think we got a bit complacent.

"We got a bake at half-time from the coach.

"We came out and started cracking in and playing the sort of footy we trained to play."

The Blues were well beaten in the clearances and Hampson said the Giants were remarkably physical and good in close for a team stacked with teenagers.

He said Carlton had fallen into the trap early in the game of expecting less than total commitment would be enough to beat such youthful opposition.

"It's quite easy to get caught in that loop when you're playing good footy and you come up against a young side like that," he said.

"You can just take the foot off the pedal five per cent and that's all it takes.

"If you do that, you give teams like that half a chance.

"Once we started cracking in like we were supposed to do, we turned it around."

He was always liked as a person. A nicer person you'd be hard pressed to meet. As a teammate, there was friction some of the time. Happens in every footy club, professional or amateur. When the siren sounded, injured or not - he was Setanta o'hAilpin, the big, friendly Irishman who will always hold a special place in many Carlton supporters hearts.

Our biggest problem is no big mother in the forward 50 who can clunk marks.
Just hope Casboult or Mitchell can come up this year which is unlikely.
Had very little interest in yesterdays game.
Should have rested a few more players

Coaches' Votes
Carlton vs Greater Western Sydney

7 Hampson (Carl)

4 Bower (Carl)
4 Greene (GWS)
3 McDonald (GWS)
3 Robinson (Carl)
2 Jamison (Carl)
1 Mohr (GWS)
1 Power (GWS)

So Sheedy gave 1 Carlton player votes in an 11 goal loss :donk:

One of those games I think where you just take the 4 points and move on. Not a lot to be read into the game in terms of either Pros or Cons, IMO.

If you'd offered me before the game a 67 point win + no injuries + we gave a new player a taste of AFL, I would have taken it...

I can't recall an 11 goal win where the winning teams supporters were so pissed off.

That being said it was garbage as a spectacle except the last quarter.

I said at the start to my mate, i hope we win by 10 goals and Setanta snags 6 for GWS. Feel bad for the big guy, but i reckon he will work his way back.

Was interesting to watch one of the frees he got where he obviously ducked and fell into the player in front of him. The crowd let out the faintest of boo's , anyone else it would have been a lot louder but still a lot of love in Navy Blue for Setanta.

As long as we keep winning i don't care how ugly it is.
