I don't agree with resting players this early in the deason. We have only played 5 games.

But I do concur with resting a couple of players who are carrying injuries if it freshens them up for later games.

I agree with this, we are only 5 weeks in, hardly time for a rest you would think

It reeks of arrogance at this stage. Perhaps something to look at in 2nd half of the year

We only play GWS once. And let's face it, they're easy pickings. So we should take advantage of this.

Any top 6 team is nuts if they don't rest players against them.

So yeah, I think we should rotate as many players as is prudent.

The 2012 Premiership will be won by the team that handles attrition better than the rest. There's no absolute standout this year, so the team that finishes the H&A season with the healthiest list will likely do the best.

It's not arrogant, or over-confident. It's a recognition that AFL football is now brutally hard to sustain over 25 weeks, and player management is crucial to doing well in the latter stages of the year.

That is partly true. History shows you need to finish in the top 4 for a chance at the big dance. With 2 interstate teams at the pointy end of the ladder at the moment, there will be interstate finals this season. If any Vic team can get one of the interstate teams at the MCG for a Prelim they are virtually in the Grand Final, conversely imagine if we have to come to Perth for a Prelim....

It's only Round 6, rest players with niggles (Yarran and whoever else) but make sure we thump GWS. Anything less than 12 goals is a failure. Especially in their first game in Melbourne.

We should be able to be smart about resting players (by missing the game or by rotations) and still getting a massive percentage boost this week.

Simple solution rest our best and still belt them - rest judd kreuzer jamo - rather them all fit and firing at the end rather than round 5 in a meaningless match with GWS
Warnock bower and ellard by resting them and putting 3 or 4 in -makes competition for spots even more acute because if they star then someone else worries about their position in the team - need about 28 decent senior players to win premiership lets make sure we give them all a go and sunday is the perfect opportunity

If they have a formula for player management it might be a good time to rest some.

Ellard, Warnock, give Kerr a debut, maybe Collins.

Who should rest? Judd, Krooze... if Armfield's knee needs a rest give him a spell. Scotland if he needs it.

Article in the advertiser this morning saying that Simmo is 1 game off the 150 in a row and won't get to it. Saying he is a shoe in to be rested this week.

I wouldn't pay any attention to that.
As if they would rest a guy about to play his 150th consecutive game.

Read for yourself if you like. Not saying it will happen, just an interesting article.

Based on ground time Simmo is probably close to, if not, top of the list but there are other games in the coming month where he can be rested. I don't think he will be missing out on the 150 consecutive games.

Rest should be based on a combination of age (Scotland, Waite, Judd), current physical condition and depth for that position on the list.
I think we have a few replacement options for Scotland and Judd but unfortunately we have no cover for Waite with Rowe, Mitchell and Casbolt all out of action.
To cover Waite at the moment you would have to play Warnock in the ruck and play either Kruezer or Hampson as a permanent forward.

Resting Judd talk, puhlease. Judd and Murphy will not be rested with Brownlow votes on the line.

I don't mind debuting a rookie or a northern player if he deserves a crack, but don't think there is any value in resting a player for the sake of resting. That is what the NAB cup was for. This game would be a good chance for Sam Rowe / Bootsma if they were ready and deserved a crack.

Only rest players if they are sore / niggling injuries. Percentage will be huge at the end of the year, could be the difference between playing the first final at the WACA or in Melbourne.

Judd said himself on "On The Couch" a few weeks back, that he would probably have 3 rests during the season. with one being a bye, which 2 games will he miss? i'm picking this week's GWS game will be the first.

The general tone of discussion here reminds me of the build up to the Essendon* game in the main media.
Reminds me also of the second final in 1994 against Geelong when all their stars were out.
Reminds me of lots of things ... but I expect I've made my point.

Judd and Scotland are the two obvious ones. I'd also look at resting Waite and Kreuzer. Murphy and Simpson maybe. Gibbs really doesn't need a rest. What he needs to do is get his ass into the midfield and score me some DT points. :banghead:

Rest as many players as we ned too.

If we cant flog GWS by 10 goals with half our side iut then we're not contenders anyway.

Essendon* and GWS are a different kettle of fish. Essendon* have a habit of causing upsets on their day a la geelong last year.
GWS are a team of kids with a few good players and a few has beens sprinkled amongst them.
They have a lot of talent, but they are kids.
