As a kid I couldn't wait to see the banner each week, what they had come up with, often the mirth that inspired in me a delightful mixture of confidence and humour (that was until beer came along). However, for various reasons now, I don't see them very often or just the one side.

I think they deserve our recognition each week for the effort they put in, so I reckon between us we someone would be able to get a photo uploaded, if not the message, of each week's and have a record of it, discuss it? If it's its own topic people could be free to suggest their own for upcoming matches as well (I enjoyed having a go at writing Melbourne's and sharing here the week we played them when they had lost scully and Bailey was booted out).

What say you good folk?

I say do away with banners altogether. Relics of the past.

Unfortunately they're just another form of promotion and marketing for our sponsors now. The players don't even run through them, either around or under them.

Used to love them as a kid. Usually make me cringe a bit now.

Great effort to make them though. And I hope they never die... it's nice to have the odd anachronism still in the game.

Sums them up pretty well I reckon, they're for the most part terrible, but I'd hate to see them gone.

Cheersquads and banners are products left over from the VFL days/early AFL days. While the game has evolved professionally, this aspect is stuck in a past age. Although, it gives the supporter side of our game a unique look... can't think of any other sport in the world where players run through a big crepe paper banner at the start of every match. People unfamiliar with AFL must think 'WTF?'

I've always thought that in recent years our banner has looked average compared to some other clubs'. Especially when celebrating a milestone game...

The good thing in players not breaking through the banner is cheersquads don't have to spend as much time making them anymore.

Agreed. They've done away with home grounds (for good reasons, I guess). Nationalised the game (for good reasons, I guess) and introduced new "franchises" to the competition (for good reasons, I guess).

But I cannot think of one good reason why the humble banner, a wonderful reminder of the past, should be done away with.

I've got a theory about cheer squads, does anyone else think its somewhat embarassing to see adults in the cheer squads, I think the clubs should get together and make it a kids only domain, perhaps have an age limit of 20? I am sure that having youths as the majority of cheer squads, rather than have the ilk of Joffa and barb, will be a much better look! Thoughts?

PS...I agree that banners arent that exciting anymore, but I can assure you, that kids at the footy reckon they are bloody fantastic, just as we all did when we were younger!

kids still love watching the players run out, shame they don't get to see them actually break a banner, FWIW Barb was never in our CS.

I see Barb sitting right in the cheer squad every time we play at the G, when the cheer squad is based at the Punt Rd End. That said, I am talking about middle aged people in general sitting in the cheer squads, surely it should be the domain of the youth?

Banners are a unique thing, am fine with them.

the corporate pre-split form they take now though is a bit sterile, basically have a zipper down the middle.

Cheersquads themselves on the other hand...

Carl-ton clap clap clap
Carl-ton clap clap clap
Carl-ton clap clap clap

... yeah not sure they add much. But at least they're occupying the worst seats at the ground so i don't have to.

Banners are a waste appart from Milestone games...
Cheersquads are something for the kids to get involved in to feel a sense of importance... Nothing more, nothing less... Glad we dont see them waving those big ugly pom pom things though like we did in the late 70s and 80s...

So it's now official: it's TC squad, not CS squad, that's in? ;)

Ps. My kids still love filling in the footy record, but the banner (nor cheers squad) is not on their radar.

Banners are from a time when throwing streamers, torn up newpaper, and even toilet rolls onto the ground was commonplace.

They've had their day, add nothing to the game, don't need 'em, get rid of 'em.

I love them. If only the messages were different. They majorly suck atm. I understand for one side to be reserved for a sponsor message but not both sides.
