And what if it is? If we win the GF this year are we one of the competitions current great teams then? Can't really say at Rd 4

i feel as though someone has held my legs apart and kicked me fair and square in the Jatz crackers!

Sorry, I cant accept this game as an abboration. I cant accept that injuries, umpires or rotations were the reason for the loss. Had we lost by a goal or two......yeah I'd cop that.

We were blown away in the 2nd qrt FFS. They were running all over us and got tired late, to make the 30 pt loss look flattering!

I've got serious concerns about the HEART of our playing group. I'd cop this game as an abboration if it were against a Sydney, a Freo, a Nth Melb even.....................................BUT bloody Essendon*???????????

Where the F**K IS YOUR PRIDE BLUES?

That loss (and percentage) probably cost us Top 4 again this year. Which state will we play a final in this year?

i felt the same but since looking at our draw i have us at 8-2 going into rounds 11 -15 where we have geelong, west coast a bye, hawthorn and collingwood

the tricky games between now and round 10 are this week, saints and perhaps adelaide at home. i have us dropping this week.

essentially we'll know exactly where we are come the conclusion of round 15.

Apparently we are supposed to beat our hoodoo teams and not drop games we are supposed to win.

By that reckoning we have to win 22 games for some to be happy.

I don't even read the sports articles any more, not worth the time if you're already following the beat.

I'm not down and out like some others, just pissed off as I felt this unfolding during the week with all the bullshit about us.
I felt un-easy when I saw the Essendon* side and certaintly we didn't help ourselves.

I'm sure some people have missed this over the last 18 hours, but the next person who decides to legitimately antagonise another poster because he cannot deal with their football rationale in the wake of a loss will be banned for 24 hours.

You are welcome to brush off a narky comment by all means, but do not wander in and make personal attacks or get over-zealous dismissing another person's view. If they were completely wrong you wouldn't even need to dismiss them, so accept they bring something to the table and discuss, because that is exactly why this forum is here.

It was the Essendon* loose man in defence, also the one in their attack and their other loose man in the middle which hurt us.

OK Here is the scoop kiddos.

Reasons we lost:
1. Essendon* dominated the ruck. If you use the Pies match last week as the contrasting example, we dominated hit outs and (in particular) hit outs to advantage. Against the Dons, we did not have first use of the footy out of the middle and the midfielders were forced into being reactive.

2. Essendon* scored on most F50 entries. I am not 100% sure on why this occurred, but it seemed to me that when coming out of our F50, the Dons had a much easier time bringing the ball up the ground, particularly through the middle. At the end of the day, we can say for certain that there was not enough pressure on the man in possession of the ball and the zone did not work. Fix those two issues and they would have scored 20% less.

3. Individual ball use was poor. This is something you can't flick a switch for. For whatever reasons, the ball did not go forward with accurate kicking enough. There were one or two passages of play where it did happen and we scored. The rest of the time, we were behind on the scoreboard and feeling the pressure which caused too many kick-and-hope moments. Also, Essendon* did very well to get players to the contest. It seemed like they always had an extra man around the ball when it was in dispute. This obviously creates more pressure on a player if they do get clean enough possession to get a kick away.

NOW, on to the crying and moaning I hear.

Harden up folks. Things didn't go right today and although many of the criticisms I have read have been justified, the attitude of some supporters disappoints me more than the team performance. There is a big difference between sharing an observation about a problem or your disappointment in a loss, and trying to drag everyone down to your level of misery and pessimism. If you think you are doing the latter, perhaps you need to go for a long walk and visit a petting zoo or something. Goats are very therapeutic.

We are 3-1. One week at a time people; don't all throw your towels in just yet! :fight:

Prior to the game, I thought that we would beat Essendon* by heaps. I hope the players didn't think the same and that they would just have to turn up to flog the Bombers.

Losing Carrots so early when we had selected a slower player to replace one of our quickest was a concern that turned our to hurt us.

With Carrots off injured, their inside mids getting the clearances and Hockings overly close tag restricting Judd, I would have directed Judd to do the same job on Watson or Stanton that Hocking was doing on him. If Hird then persisted with Hocking tagging Judd it would have freed up our other mids.

As other posters have mentioned we do not seem to have contingencies for when things go wrong, but to be fair it is difficult to make up for the number of injuries we had during the game.

In a contemporary sense, yes. You are only as good as your last season and most teams deserve their premierships. I think most people think that Adelaide may have got lucky several years back but that's close to being about it.

We go from having a great list to being "not one of the great teams"; there is something uncomfortably out of sync with that.

Really disappointing loss yesterday! It's a bitter pill to swallow losing to those mongrels.
The funny thing was, I started to get text msg's from all my Collingwood mates giving it to me and this was 1 week after we gave them a touch up ... worst supporters ever!

I think we will bounce back and have a sting in our tails for the Freo game, we will give it a red hot crack over there.
As for Essendon*, they are a top 8 side but not a top 4 side ... Hird did a number on us yesterday

Forecast at this stage is 29 and a shower or two, so a fast deck is in order.
Ins:
AJ
Armfield (if fit)
Walker

Outs:
Carrazzo (inj)
Mclean (omit)
Yarran (inj)

You need midfielders to replace Carrazzo and McLean....None of the above three are anything more than cameo appearance midfielders. Ellard had 38 yesterday in the VFL. The kid kicked 15 goals from 19 games...has more runs on the board McLean, Curnow and Lucas...get him in!

Speed wise I dont think we'd be too hurt playing Ellard and Curnow together.

No they are not the quickest out there but they are not in the same hemisphere as Brock in terms of how slow he actually is.

I also think Ellard is more likely to do a run with of those 3, which we clearly need now that Carrots is gone. AJ and Armfield might be the others to do this job, but lets be honest Ellard is a clearance winner, Dennis and Ronnie Joseph not so much.

Its what we do next week that counts.Got to be far more ferocious at the ball.Too many guys waiting for Bombers players to get the pill and applying the monster tackle. It dont work like that.Ya gotta be first to the pill fullstop.Gotta want that footy..............Hunger for the footy is the magic potion.

In 1995 we lost 2 games for the year

Rd 8
Sydney 21.6 (132) d Carlton 8.12 (60)

Rd 9
St Kilda 11.14 (80) d Carlton 3.6 (24)

And if I remember correctly a lot of people had us written off after only
kicking 3 goals against the Saints.

If our performance yesterday is a one off, then no one's will really going to give a shit. As long as the
boys learn from it, this could be the wake up call and kick up the arse that had to happen.

Now lets see how they respond ?
