I think their struggles can be pin pointed to three main areas.

Defensive structures from kick outs - Last year, Leon Davis dominated the stats for effective kick ins and goals scored from kick ins. Without him, their structures in this regard look ordinary. Don't think Marty Clarke is up to it, and you want Shaw receiving the kick in, not delivering it, elite kick as he is. Hawthorn have Birchall, Suckling, Guerra and Burgoyne roaming their back 50, all elite kicks. We have Yarran, Scotland, Gibbs and now Tuohy. Collingwood has Shaw, and I think this where Geelong are falling down also, missing Hunt and Wocjinski out of their back 50. You need elite kicks out of your back half.

Their structures looked awkward, with plenty of hesitation. Losing Davis has meant losing a much bigger avenue to goal than what was previously thought.

Lack of role players in their midfield rotations - Ben Johnson is another bloke that you wouldn't think they have missed as much as they have. Their midfield lacks a stopper. Wellingham has done the job on Judd in the past, but way too big an ask coming in first up and with little support from his teammates. Looking over the 22 that played on Friday night, no-one was going to be able to do a Carrazzo like job on Judd or Murphy.

As a result, they struggle against sides who can match them at the centre clearances, as good as they are offensively.

Stoppages around the ground - Something that has been their bread and butter for years now. The way that they are orchestrated, how they set up for them, both offensively and defensively. They got smashed in this area on Friday night, and I put that down primarily to a lack of a decent second ruck and Jolly getting on. Another avenue to goal at the very least diminished, if they're not dominating this area of the game for four quarters. If they're not winning it outright, the pressure is on a shaky backline's dubious kicking skills, and a midfield that really only runs one way.
