Richmond semi final '01 - such a shit game with dull atmosphere. Low scoring. I don't recall hating a player as much as I did Stephen Sziller for no real reason. He gave Campo a bath that day. Kouta's knee. SOS' last game...
Essendon* GF '93 - Less said the better...
Geelong '02 (Touched........)
Essendon* out at Waverley in 94... Lost by one point by kicking something like 7.25 that day. They had such a crap year that year and beat us twice still. 1994 was just such a shit year all round.

A couple of other ones.

West Coast game at PP in 2002, the week after the Geelong game...losing by a point to Ben Cousins and 21 blokes who were just ordinary. We played just as bad. They were in front at the final siren. Didn't win anything. We lost plenty. That match is the very definition of "It couldn't get any worse, could it?"............before 3 other better definitions straight after it later that year.

Corresponding match at Subi the year later wasn't much better either.

I don't think I've left a game as early as I did the Melbourne game in 2004. We'd come off a couple of wins, were looking alright, then Melbourne just smashed us in the opening quarter. I left at the 5 minute mark of the second quarter. I've left games maybe late in the third quarter, but never that early. That was as bad as I'd seen us play live.

Those finals like Melbourne 94 & 2000 were infuriating, no doubt...but don’t know about demoralising. We were after all a good side both those years with more to look forward to.

For pure demoralising I’ve never been able to go past rd 7 2005 against Richmond at the MCG. 7 goals to nothing in the first qtr. We gave up.

Poor old Setanta will always remember that as his AFL debut.

For me it's the banter between mates in the following week that makes it demoralising, so an unexpected loss with a lot on the line and a huge losing margin usually do the job (unless it's well into a losing streak).

I was at the 2000 loss against the Dees and that was pretty awful. The loss against Richmond in SOS' 300th game was also pretty bad - same year too from memory?

Carlton clearly the best side that year and they were literally punched out of a flag by a bunch of thugs

What pissed me off most was that Balme and the rest got off scot-free

Not necessarily 'most demoralising', but 2 others that gave me the shites - as well as those already mentioned - was losing to Richmond in Rnd 22 by 2 points in 1997 after being about 40 points up, and therefore missing the finals. Would'nt have done any damage in September, but it was just a shocking day of injuries, and missed opportunities.

The other was having to witness live Burgoyne after the siren, Rnd 21 2000. 7 points up with about 45 seconds to go, to then lose by 5!

Finals games aside, I think CK is right there's still something to look forward to...there was a game at Princes Park against Port in 98 I think, Tredrea was a first year player, kicked a bagful and we lost by about 90 points. I thought we threw the towel in and I left just before 3/4 time. First time I ever left a game early.

The Ben Dixon goal (2004?) after the siren loss hurt really bad. I felt just gutted for days after that one. And of course it was the weekend I was down from Sydney to watch some footy, wasn't it?

That was in 2001 and I agree, it was really frustrating, particularly since we led all day but kicked inaccurately and it cost us the game in the end. I remember feeling like we got robbed, but I guess it was ultimately our own fault. Dixon was a beautiful kick for goal so there was never any chance of him missing.

We actually lost a game after the siren in three consecutive seasons and all of those games have been mentioned in this thread - Port in 2000 (Burgoyne), Hawthorn in 2001 (Dixon) and Geelong in 2002 (Riccardi). That's a pretty quirky and unlucky run!

One particularly demoralising game I remember was a 108-point loss to Collingwood on a Friday night in Round 18, 2002. We kicked four goals for the night, the last of which came after the final siren from Corey McKernan. Collingwood were good that year and just toyed with us, it was embarrassing.

'73 GF after a small missile named Fowler went airborne early on in Q1 hit Big Nick head high and our captain–coach and enforcer was in a daze for the rest of the game. Then thugs like Balme ran riot belting ball players like Southby.

The 1973 GF vs Richmond........before the game; we lost Barry Armstrong from the centre, and Trevor Keogh and Craig Davis; who had kicked valuable goals coming in thru the earlier finals; and we started with backpocket Jack O'Connell in the centre; Gary Crane roving; and promoted Vinnie Catoggio for his first Final......disaster....Vin got stagefright and was a passenger; unfortunately.

Then.....Laurie Fowler cannoned into Big Nick; and he fell to the ground like a huge oak tree; and the whole MCG went quiet; as this had never happened before....Nicholls knocked out....what???

Big John never really recovered that day; signifying the end of playing Coaches forever.

Of course; to compound all of this; Neil Balme ironed out Geoff Southby, thereby nullifying our premier defender for the day; and the Tigers got revenge for '72 with a 5 goal win.

for me the first thing that I think of is the 1988 prelim against Melbourne, they were given a goal that hit the post and the wind changed direction to favour them in two consecutive quarters. This was after we lost narrowly to the Hawks earlier in the finals and lost the dominator after he destroyed collingwood (last time we played them in the finals).

The result in the GF showed that we were more worthy of being there, similar to 2000 and 1994.

Melbourne make it a habit of ruining our finals.
