Should have kept Carlos and got rid of Bower, at least you were entertained and were guaranteed 100% commitment.

The Setanta we passed on to draft Rowe?

Bower's decision making isn't as bad as Setanta's.

Love how everyone gets their knives out after a practice match.

Agreed.

No point reading anything into the result. A nice workout for the established players like Scotland, Murphy, Simmo, Gibbs, Betts, Carrots & T-Bird. Some exciting signs from the Kreuzer/Hammer ruck/forward combination. Garlett, Laidler & Hendo showed enough to suggest they should continue on from last year. Lucas, Brock & Collins look to have improved. Bootsma, Buckley, Carter, Casboult, Dale, Kerr & McCarthy getting a run - good to see Buckely & Dale get involved and have an impact. No injuries (except for Tuohy - although I think he just copped a stray elbow to the pills).

On the less positive side - I think AJ, Armfield, Curnow, Davies, Ellard & JR missed an opportunity to impress the MC. Same could probably be said of Bower & Watson.

If this game format is part of the AFL's 'future vision', heaven help us. Shorter games, less subs, what a joke. What's the use of trialling less subs in the preseason, this rubbish gives us no guide to the season ahead.

The format ensured GWS didn't lose to collingwood by 20 goals. In the eyes of AFL House, mission accomplished.

We seem to to be a bit schizophrenic at the moment. Toughened up on the training track but miles behind in terms of match readiness. The last month or so we seemed to have slackened off after a really heavy start, it's no wonder we didn't play too well. How does it all prepare us for the season proper? :?

Wow. Did you happen to take a look at the team sheets for the games ? How can you make any judgement on our performance given the players missing ? Just a chance to see some of the young guys is all, and there were very promising signs from some of them.

Yep, I think the commentator's and the umpires were just as frustrating as the skills errors we made.

I love the commentator's policy of "If you don't know who the player is, just completely ignore them and wait til Murphy or Scotland gets the ball."

I would've thought the main reason people are even watching such a meaningless match is to see the new players. The commentators could at least take the time to try to figure out who they are, what they do and where they come from.

I loved the fact they were proud of the fact that their cameras captured the "amazing scenes" of Kreuzer kicking the goal in the first game. You would bloody hope so.

I tend to look for new player's ability to get involved in the game. I thought Fraser Dale looked a very likely type. Kane Lucas was really playing like someone who believed they could really influence a game. Hammer kicking straight from set shots was encouraging.

It's funny, you tell yourself that it's february and it's a meaningless match but you still can't help but get angry when things don't go perfectly to plan.

I'll work on my ability to chillax and the boys will be better for the run with plenty of important inclusions to make.

what happened to sam rowe?
kane lucas, looks fantastic, kicking, running, linking up.
kreuzer, gee whiz.
hampson, marking well and kicking goals, lazer has worked.
henderson, looks at home, can take a good mark, our new chb.[full time]
curnow, great too see him back again, looks good, will get better as the weeks go by.
laidler, can see why the club chased him, very solid.
frazer dale, quite impressed, think he will be aright.
mitch carter, see above.
thought patty mccarthy should have had more game time, looked like he played for 5/6 minutes.
matthew watson, just turned 18, and people are getting into him, give him a break, big boys take 3/4 years.
scotland, carrazzo, murphy, gibbs, eddie, gartlett, yazza, all still have it.

Being at the ground, it was more annoying that we lost, rather than not getting the 'joy' of a win. Opposition supporters were frustrating, but by reading through the thread sounds like I was better off not having to listen to 'Captain Spectacular' and his mates on Foxtel.

Not much to add to all the player views. Being there gave a real insight into how far away in was into what you'd expect from an AFL game. The gut defensive running, multiple leads to get onto the end of a ball, the receive, give off, and then push hard to receive again and manic forward pressing were simply nowhere to be seen.

Other thing to remember that we are analysising matches which considering both 'halves' went for about 18 and 1/2 minutes were not much longer than a quarter of regular AFL football. There are games against these sides where you will win despite playing poorly purely for the advantage you have through sheer size, experience and fitness.

The poor skills can by a combination of rust, as well as the lack of understanding and cohesion amongst the side. A kick can look poor, due to a player running to a wrong spot, or a handball missed because the receiver is not expecting it etc. So many rotations, subs, makeshift back and front 6's etc.

The Kreuzer/Hampson combo would be my highlight of the arvo.

Actually turns 20 in July - but I will give him another pre-season.

Pro's

1) Hammer clunking marks in front of his face
2) Lift in intensity when Yarran, Betts and Gartlett were playing
3) Hendo picked up where he left off last year
4) Ditto Murphy
5) Dale has footy smarts

Con's

1) Very rusty skills....missed chest marks, handballing behind players going past, etc
2) Has Carrazzo ever put a long kick to the advantage of a team mate? Always seems to turnover over distance.
3) Kicks from back pocket being centred and intercepted
4) Strange interpretations from the lime gray maggots but we gave away a few 50m penalties
5) Decision making rusty as well...first option not taken a number of times today

All up what you'd expect from the first hitout of the season. Hopefully without a chance of making the final we can just go about our business quietly for the next month and bring in missing players when ready.

Could only find last years;

"In 2011 the prize money totalled $666,000 – Premiership winner $198,000, 2nd $132,000, 3rd and 4th $88,000 each, 5th-6th-7th-8th $40,000 each".

Thanks for that.

Worth winning.

Not interested in the result. A mickey mouse lightening premiership today. Thankful that there is no injuries. Will be interested in how we go next week against the pensioner favourites.
