Surely if teams are only in the top 7 there is no chance for them to be in contention to win? Don't you have to be leading the competition in numerous areas to be a realistic chance? Thats why we can't win.

there would be a bunch of clubs doing more things right than us. as we see with membershp figures, dollar turn over figures ,sponsorshIP and innovations
as you can see demonstrated by almost every indicator you look at.

so yes a few teams have opportunity to win a flag cms they must be doing more things right.

Yes, some clubs are more innovative than Carlton that is for sure.
The most recent successful football club is Geelong and for some reason they don't strike me as being innovative, they strike me as a meat and potato football club.
Am I missing something?

Injuries, or lack thereof, have a massive say regarding ultimate onfield success. If we have a good run with injuries we'll be in the mix. We have adequate football department infrastructure and adequate revenue (pokies/corp sponsorship for the time being) to provide for the FD.

Yes theyre meat and potato innovative.
Whats meat and potato about how Geelong run their club?
They might do it effortlessly well... but youd hardly call them meat and potatoes right now.

they do what they need to do to buoy their club and place it in the very best position possible.. on and off the field according to their own unique circumstances.

3 premierships.9in what 4 or 5 years is a pretty good effort...
Big profits
and dont go hunting a surplus of hbf .
Wellsy knows its about the midfield.....he hunts gun midfielders.!!!Thats why they can afford to lose Ablett and still win a flag.

Agro.. baz baz thought he was onto something there..... shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Also took them 8-10 years to win a flag after Costa/Cook/Thompson took over the place.

If we win a flag and it's due to our ability to rotate players through the HBF would that be considered innovative.

The underwater tready will be the next big thing at all clubs if we win a flag. Innovative.

If we win a flag even the scooter will be considered innovative.

We need to be innovative, but also copy everyone else.

Geelong didn't do its aspirations any harm picking up a swag of F/S picks, either, including some of the best or potentially best players of their time. Our past and present players obviously don't have their tongues in the right place at the vinegar stroke. We don't need any more girls. And we don't need any mediocre boys. Lets hope Dylan breaks the current drought and SOS's boys make a difference when the time comes.

Luck plays a part in any premiership. Hawthorn picked Geelong on a day when Cam Mooney couldn't kick to, well, win a premiership. We had a few key players out at key times last year. Warnock tried to kick a goal when he should have just stayed on the ground andf let someone who could actually see the goals, have a shot.

It's all very well to get on one's soapbox and complain about the direction we are taking, all I see is constant improvement. If we continue to jump even one position on the ladder every year we can't help winning it soon. One position is all we need to seriously challenge. We were two points away from it last year. Well, one if you consider the draw against Essendon*, which they were relieved to get and we were unlucky.

I think we could have won it last year with a bit of luck and I am not going to change my mind this year.

I'm in Bondi's camp.

Ah yes but remember......
We have won ONE finals game in the three campaigns.. and beat Essendon* who noone thought would even make the finals.. and we lost to the previous seasons wooden spooners.

Those wooden spooners from the previous season... rose up the ladder like the pheonix... finished ahead of us.. beat us twice including the finals.

Yes we were missing players but so did everybody else....

And nothing guarantees is this year from missing players.. or anyone else.

The Gary Ablett / Mark Thompson scenario was amatuerish at best for a club that is run so well.
Bomber Thompson and his behaviour during the season when he eventually left was also an absolute disgrace.
This all happened under Cook/Costa's watch and it was pretty meat and potato.
I suppose when you win flags average people forget that stuff.
