In case some of you missed it, the Club are going to send a Certificate Of Appreciation to every volunteer. The phone call could have been handled better for sure. I agree with grro as to what a good reward for service would be.

Reading through the posts though, I don't think I would lose my emotional connection to the club, as that connection lives underneath the personnel that move through the offices.

Good luck, and all strength for the coming months Freddy47.

I get a certificate of appreciation for being a member and not doing much else each year.

21 years full time service pro bono to a football club is nothing short of extraordinary. Every year at work, I look at my volunteer leave and try to find windows of opportunity to use it at the club. Every year I find myself wanting, as the time just isn't there.

How you fit those 21 years in, is something that deserves to be appreciated, admired and put on a pedastal for those like us who should do more for the club, but for whatever reason don't.

Instead, without any disrespect intended to Freddy here. I fully expect a badly laser printed certificate that involves a misspelt surname congratulating him on his one year of junior membership, with an offer of 5% off at the Carlton Shop.

And whilst it is what it is, a slap in the face to someone who clearly deserves more. To me, I see it as an opportunity to find better ways to spend that volunteer leave when I get an opportunity.

I'm good but not that good. Not full time by any means at any time. The last 10 years or so have just been match day duties. Before that, over various earlier years I developed a stats database/system, a recruiting/draft database/system and a best & fairest voting database/system in my spare time. None of these systems are being used anymore. I have a very good career as a Senior IT Consultant at a company called DWS (product placement).

As far as Synbad's comment. I know of one other that hasn't been around quite as long as me but has spent a lot more time at the club carrying out his duties that is in the same boat.

Dear Sam's mailbag,
Recently a long time volunteer at Carlton........

It's the modern way, Freddie. You should be thankful you weren't told by SMS.

Good luck with everything. The club and organizations like it are never the same without people who give their time freely. Pun intended.

As for your wife, the battle is just beginning. I have seen it close up. Never, ever give up. It can be beaten.

I am a little worried. First time around she was very brave and convinced she will beat it. This time she is freaked out somewhat. I have spent some time with her over the last few days just talking.

You know what to do BM, stay strong for her. Had the same thing with my mum. She was getting a bit irrational at times, she knew it, and she wanted calm and positive support (rational support!). It's very easy to focus on the negatives, she'll need to you to remind her of the positives.

Best wishes BM.

Again good luck BM. Hate hearing these things as I've been through it and know the pain you go through when a loved one is fighting.

Ahh to top it all off. I accidently badly injured BMjnr during training last Sunday, thus this week has been a series of trips to Drs, MRIs and specialists although I knew pretty much knew how much damage I had done ( protruding disc in the neck and upper back to add to the two existing in the lower back).

BMjnr has been really good about it although I have felt like shite all week.

Thanks for your service Freddy.
As hurt as you are by the actions of the idiots at the club, don't waste any time or energy on those flowers. It isn't worth the effort.

All the best to your missus. Devote yourself to something that actually matters.

Firstly Freddy, your wife takes precedence without doubt, but if you do feel strong about the way things have panned out for you, then don't stop now.
I'd be happy to add my name to an on-line petition to remind the CFC of just how important volunteers/members and supporters really are to the CFC.
Whether it be Sticks, Swann or for any other suit in control, they'll come and go, but the club will remain.
All of us need a good smack in the mouth at times, just to remind us of who we are and where to set our priorities.

One bad experience should not have us throwing away the baby with the bath-water.

Hope your wife is recovering well Freddy47.

Just curious. Did the Certificate Of Appreciation arrive as promised?

If so, were you satisfied with it?
