Bit harsh there on Macca. Macca has the qualifications, intelligence and experience to do a very good job.

Macca has potential to go very far up the ladder in football. It is nothing like cronyism.

All else being equal, I'd take a Carlton man over anyone else. I have no reason to believe that McKay isn't the equal of anyone else we could've snared for this role.

Who's to say that love for the club doesn't make a man put in the extra 5-10% that might separate his performance from that of his alternatives?

I agree. Imagine the uproar if McKay signed as Football GM at another club & he ends up being very successful at it (which based on his pedigree, is a fair chance). The football club can't win sometimes. It is no surprise that #1 critic here is the same dufus who was calling for Rattens head 12 months ago - yep you guessed it, 'cos he was appointed by "his mates"

I am mixed about this appt.
As a candidate, McKay ticks most boxes except one, previous experience and excellence in this role.
He is bright enough to learn it well and he definitely would have some useful contacts at the Politburo.

But was he the "best" man for the job. Probably not. Maybe he was the best available. We don't know.

I am pretty sure he will end up performing very well in this role, but I just hope the club cast their net fairly wide before landing The Vet.

Andrew McKay to join Carlton

McKay has been working with the AFL for the last seven years and brings outstanding credentials to this role.

He has been the AFL Game Development Manager for the last three years as well as a member of the AFL Laws of the Game Committee and the Tribunal Review Committee. Previously he had been a member of the AFL Match Review Panel, including three years as Chairman.

Did they have to mention the negative part of his CV?

I think the idea is to have a balance.

It's not like everyone at the entire club was an ex-player.

I think he will do a top job for the Blues.

Sticks will know what he is getting with this appointment and Swann would know a fair bit about the way Andy Mc works too.

I agree with you Buzz - I wonder who had the final say, was it Swann or Sticks or a "majority" vote. We'll never know I guess and now the decision is made all we as supporters can do is trust the club, wish Andy all the best and hope we (they) got it right.

Sign up Gibbs, Kruez etc pre Christmas to long term deals and it will be a great start!

Anyone know whether it is full time or whether he will be continuing practising as a vet part time. Be a big call for him to give up being a vet, not sure if it is something you can go back to in 5 years.

I love the wohle "they must be better if they're not from Carlton" mentality that continues to hang around :lol:

Welcome back to Andy, one of my all-time favourites.

His CV indicates he should be a good fit for the position.

Plus he brings a bit of passion for the Carlton Football Club when he is speaking to players about extending their contracts. Nothing wrong with that.....

Good appointment I reckon...... Looking forward to see what he can do.

lots of people have credentials.
but mates are mates.

there will come a time that a hard call will need to be made.
there always is in life.

there is a reason you don't marry your siblings.
cross breeding is important.

if this happened in govt it would be cronyism.

Welcome to AFL!

What an absolute crock.
without going too far back

President;
Ian Rice

Coach;
Barassi
Thorogood
Stewart
Parkin
Pagan

Footy Manager;
Icke

Assistant coach;
Brown
Richardson
Harvey
Montgomery
Riley
Barker

Captain;
JUDD

Actually think that's the most factually incorrect post i've ever read.

It's true - since when did being a passionate former Carlton man become a negative?

Fair enough, you want varying opinions and viewpoints to be considered in your decision-making. And you don't want sub-standard candidates being appointed because they're mates with someone.

But one glance at McKay's previous experience should dispel any doubts. 7 years at the AFL, in powerful roles such as Game Development Manager, Laws of the Game Committee, Tribunal Review Committee and Chairman of the Match Review Panel. He has clearly risen up the AFL ranks very quickly (or was it because he is mates with someone there? or because he cured Demetriou's dogs glaucoma?) and gained experience in a diverse array of roles. He is clearly very connected, intelligent, likable and successful on his own merit.

The fact he is a former premiership player and loves the club is surely just the cherry on top of the beautifully and delicately baked mud cake, not some cheap Home Brand cooking chocolate used to make it. People truly underestimate the value of (highly capable) people with a passion for their club/organisation. They come to Carlton because they love Carlton and want nothing more than to see us back at the top - that is an incredible thing.

You're right, there's 40-odd blokes still playing.

Aside form that, we just need to bump Ratts off his perch in favour of Bradley and we'll have South Australians running the show. :thumbsup:

Those 3 roles which occupied the bulk of the 7 years are not highly relevant to his role as Football Manager. Otherwise KB would be a shoo-in.
