Huge loss for us and massive test without him.

So Richardson will go from Judd, Jamison, Murphy, Jamison, Henderson, Yarran, Gibbs and Simpson to Riewoldt, Dawson, Dal Santo, Gilbert, Gram, Milne and Montagna?

Good luck with that cultural shift.

And don't forget Jamison too.

One thing is for sure with this saints gig, whoever gets it will be going through major transition in the next 3 years.

The big guns are ageing and/or going backwards fast (Kosi, Roo, Hayes), they have little young talent coming through. They are already at their TPP limit and have game style will be change ensuring a major relearning is in order.

I can see some pain coming their way for a few years at least and its quite amusing!!!

Yep, poisoned chalice. Wouldn't go near the job unless it was acknowledged by the club that it was time to rebuild and take some pain.

Agree, many of their stars have gone backwards. Not sure it's the case with Kosi, as we've known this for a number of years...seemed to go backwards after he sustained a head injury from the Gia hit. Riewoldt's kicking is not good enough, too many times in matches when there's a crunch time and he needs to kick a captain's goal, but fails to deliver. Not a very big game player either. Hayes is a great player but will take a while to get back into the swing of things at AFL level...and he doesn't have youth on his side either. With a new coach implementing a new plan, and an inevitable list turnover, I'm not so sure he'd fit into those plans.

They don't look too bad on the surface, with the likes of Schneider, Milne, McEvoy, Montagna, Goddard...but they have no depth whatsoever. Dawson has been servicable for them but his days are numbered in the AFL...there's a reason Hawthorn cut him and look where they are now.

Ross Lyon saw the writing on the wall, took the team as far as he could, milked every ounce out of them, but to no avail. Should have at the very least a flag each from the Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon eras.

Richardson has the credentials to be a great coach, only, does he want to be part of another side rebuilding? What attracts so many personnel to our club is the upside the list has...we finished a close 5th this season, one kick away from a preliminary final at the G against a team we match up well with. Plenty of players to come back into the team, and improvement to be had throughout. Seems too good to leave and join a club bound for struggling in the next 3-5 years as opposed to a team playing regular finals and pushing for a flag in the next couple of seasons. There's a distinction to make when talking about teams rebuilding and developing. A club like Melbourne would have been a good fit for Richo as they have an exciting young list to work with. He'll stay put until there's a good fit for him...leaving us for St.Kilda wouldn't happen when comparing the lists.

Does anyone want to coach a side on the slide?

Of course they do when:
1) There are only 18 positions of their type available in oz
2) It is your first senior opportunity

Good luck to any of the 3. I am sure each would be salivating at the opportun

So, back on the topic. Is Richardson still in the running or not?

C'mon Eddie read the aritcles, the media are all over this.

They've narrowed it down to that he's either got the job, or he has missed out.

Interesting if so as Laidley was on a sunken ship with Port and now off to one that is sinking.

This might sound crazy but if I was a coach I'd much rather start with Port's list than St Kilda's...

SCOTT Watters has been appointed coach of St Kilda.

The Saints today told the Collingwood assistant coach that he was the man to take charge of the club.

Watters, 42, beat out fellow AFL assistants Ken Hinkley and Alan Richardson for the job after a series of interviews.

Watters played 109 games after making his debut for West Coast in 1989. He also played for Sydney and Fremantle before retiring in 1996.

He served as a coach at WAFL club Subiaco before joining the Magpies in late 2009.
