I think apart from Collingwood, Essendon* and Richmond we will play West Coast twice. The other two teams we play twice will be one Vic and one interstate.

I read somewhere the AFL were going to try and avoid scheduling teams to play both GC and GWS twice. Not sure if this is possible though.

GWS and GC play the same number of games as any other club so by definition they have to play some teams twice...

Thats not what she is saying...

They want to make sure that no team plays both GWS and the suns twice. This is possible.

22 rounds, with first 17 rounds playing each other once. That leaves 5 rounds. GWS plays 5 teams twice, Suns play 5 other teams twice. One of those occassions you would think would be each other so...

That means.
4 teams play GWS 2 times, Suns Once
4 teams play Suns 2 times, GWS once
8 teams play suns and GWS once only.

Which group will Carlton fall into I wonder.......

Apologies, oversight on my part.

The eye roll was aimed at the AFL not the poster btw.

you would think they would throw Port Adelaide into the mix with the not playing twice

With regards to playing GC and GWS twice, they'll each play 5 teams twice, for a total of 10 games, although they'll probably play each other twice so that leaves 8 games.

Take out the 6 teams who played GC twice this year and that leaves 10 teams to play 8 games so 2 miss out.

What are the chances we're one of them?

Thats becoming a tradition too.

My guess is for Essendon* Rnd 3 and then Collingwood Rnd 4 or 5.

draw is a joke
every team plays the 5 other teams twice.
Farce. It promotes inequality in how easy and tough the draw is.

Why not play every team just once
teams get say 3 breaks during the year
9 games of footy every weekend is getting too much in my opinion
have a break for everyone after the last round.
have all your wanky awards to fill that fortnight in

Players are fresher for the finals.

Obviously other things would change and there would be stumbling blocks.

But the number one thing is that every teams draw is the same. It isnt and needs to be addressed.

Good in theory, but there is this little thing called a TV rights agreement which has had a few signatures upon it already and difficult to erase.

why doesnt everyone play each other the once with a new mini draw done for the last 5 rounds post round 17? perhaps they could schedule another bye in to allow the afl time to organise themselves.

the draw could be based on ladder position so that bottom teams dont give top teams an easy run into the top 4 (e.g. Hawthorn playing the bottom 2 4 times this year).

short of everyone playing each other twice i cant think of a fairer way.

Every major league in the world tries to cash in on rivalries. Plus the game is better for it too. Why wouldn't you want that?

If you're going to do that then why not go the whole hog and go for a conference system based on the traditional or natural enmities?

EG

3 conference structure 3 x 6 team conferences:

NORTHERN
Brisbane
Gold Coast
Sydney
GWS
2 VIctorian Clubs

WESTERN
WCE
Freo
Adelaide
Port Power
2 Victorian clubs

SOUTHERN
The big 4 Victorian clubs + 2 other Victorian Clubs
CARLTON
COLLINGWOOD
Essendon*
RICHMOND

Teams play the other teams in their conference twice (10 games) - so all you traditional rivalries, derbies etc - and the teams in the other divisions once (2 x 6 = 12 games) for a total of 22 games for the season. You could even formalise the situation with interstate travel so that the Southern conference teams do only one trip to each State each year, although admittedly the Victorian teams in the Northern and Western conferences would have more travel on their plate, but evenly divided that would only amount to 2 more trips a year. Assuming you want a final 8 you would take the top 3 teams from each conference and delete the worst performed 3rd placed team (if even on points then by percentage and in the unlikely event of identical percentage who lost their only head to head battle for the year.) The order of 1-3, 4-6 and 7-8 would again be by points/percentage/head-to-head.

Teams could compete for the honour of conference champion as well as ultimate premiership honours.

As a general rule I am not a fan of adopting American styles, whether in sport or otherwise, but I am warming to the benefits of a conference system.

The current system is fine so long as there is a count for interstate games over the last 5 years. Every year when fixturing they should go back 5 years and if the Victorian club is under 20 or 22 over that time, they get the max number of interstate games.

Collingwood is due.

For interstate clubs, maybe a strength of schedule for interstate games? West Coast had a fairly easy ride with interstate games last season, save for maybe playing us.
