Thanks Doc.....I must confess I'd forgotten that the VFA ( VFL) operated successfully in 2 Divisions; and it could work again.

Yeh, I can remember a 2nd Division game at GW (The ground had a velodrome around the boundary).

It was a full House. Geelong west v Caulfield. Players included Billy Goggin for GW, Tony Jewell Paddy Guinane & Ray Ball (dad of Luke) for the Bears

Imagine the first stand alone AFL reserves side - relegated to 2nd division

[quote="anfield"] We are arguably the 2nd biggest national brand in the game after Collingwood. [quote]

I think we used to be. Furthermore I think we used to be #1. Distraction away from our brand and postitioning has occured in the last 10 or so years - on and off the field.

Our brand is 'navy blue'. Not red, white, yellow, M&M Blue. Everything we put our name to should be navy blue, that includes reserves teams. $110K - rather than pay a marketing agency a mint to come up with some whacky campaign for 2012 (side note - I think 2011 campaign is an improvement), how about investing a portion of the marketing budget to help cover the cost? After all it is partly a branding exercise.

In terms of geography, our brand message should be at a point where we have saturated Aus and are looking internationally for our next growth. Unfortunately we are not at that point yet.

Targeting Melbourne geography is now probably too micro, and you may be flushing good money away to people who have already made a decision (new immigrants to Victoria - an exception - but again collingwood are already all over this)

..absolutely want a carlton reserves team.. ..couldn't care less what happens to the bullants.. ..don't care about any of those amatuerish leagues.. ..with the big $$ the AFL rakes in, they should be funding a proper AFL reserves comp.. ..play 'em as "curtain raisers".. .... ..from our blues point of view, we need full control and development of our ressies team.. ..much rather focus on development than focus on win/loss ratio in the ressies.. ..back the ressies team so our kids play where they need to for us, team learns our gameplan, and all blues players play to our gameplan.. ..and FFS get our ressies back to PP in some capacity..

I am torn between my love for the Blues and the fact that i used to play in the VFA, l still have a soft spot for the existing clubs even though my old club Prahran is no longer in the VFL. Its a struggling lower grade Amateur club that has just aligned itself with Assumption college.

I think best thing long term for Carlton is we go alone but I would hate to see a former proud club the Northern Bullants nee Preston fold. I have seen too may go that way in the last 25 years. If they could only be propped up by the AFL or someone to survive.

PS:- the best club/ most suitable club would have been Brunswick if they were still around or Coburg as both clubs had a lot of ex Blues play for them and both are in heartland, either side of Sydney Rd.

We have already cemented our relationship with Bullants - their is another thread about this somewhere.

Next season the Bullants will be re-named "Northern Blues" and play in a Navy Blue Jumper - most games will be played at Visy Park.

This will be the best model for AFL/VFL affiliation going forward.

I fully expect that the rush for AFL teams to ditch their VFL affiliates will slow as soon as they realise that there is no substitute for a competative environment.

The push for reseves sides in the AFL (as opposed to an affiliate relationship) is done only to satisfy the megalomaniacal need's of head coaches.

I watched our listed guy's in a few of those games this year and you could tell those games meant something to them.

Most of the details are in this thread - with a link to "The Age" article in the first post.

Just do it already.
..........................................................................................
Step1. Carlton VFL side playing @ Princes Park with the CFC jumper
Step2. Interstate teams @ PP and all home games @ the G.

Any coincidence in the two best teams of the last few years, and today's grand finalists having stand alone VFL teams?

Wouldn't the branding be stronger if they were simply called "Carlton"??

Northern Blues is only going to be changed again in coming years because it stands for nothing...

Never heard that anywhere before. You could be onto something. Maybe let the media know.
