You clearly have absolutely no idea whatsoever.

Joseph was excellent and Army was good and remains in our best 22 next year. I love Setanta, but he's short of being a premiership forward, nevertheless, serviceable last night.

Three areas we need to improve to be a premiership threat next year...

Contested marking - that was the standout against Essendon*. We need to improve organically or recruit to be able to mark in this manner as we move the ball forward against the best sides.

FWD50 entries - we must improve our kicking efficiency into the forward half. So many kicks went too high to be easily spoiled or fell short of their intended target. It's alarming how bad the delivery is from our midfielders.

Kicking for goal - every player that may find themselves anywhere near the goals should be practicing this ad nasuem in the off-season.

I refuse to go down the 'Essendon*' path by calling us 'Brave'.

We played well, but didn't get over the line. Be it missed shots or those @#$%&! umpires. We had a good season, and i am very proud of my blue boys, but we have got some work to do and i'm now confident that Ratts is the man that can do it!

WTF Judd? Surely he's carrying an injury.

I was privileged to play in the Carlton golf day at Sorrento earlier this year & I had a really good chat with Sticks & a few fellow board members! They all agreed that 2011 was a big learning year & that 2012 was when we were realistically anticipating a full tilt @ a flag!

This year has been an awesome year in the development of many players such as Yarran, Murph, Hendo, Gibbs, Laidler, Jamo, Jeffy, 206, AJ, Duigs.

For the whole year we never had Jamo, Cruz & Waite in the same team!

One thing that has really stood out for me late in the year is the non reliance on Juddy, that to me says the team is ready to go bang in 2012!

Like most teams who win flags, u need real hurt games like last night, look at the cats in Sydney in 05 I think, Pies in 07 in the elimination against the cats...last night will hurt ALL Carlton people especially the players, that's what will motivate them next year!

I am, we are Carlton!

If that game doesn't prove that we need to rest Judd next year in games against the Suns, GWS and Port I don't know what will.......

Need our best player in peak condition at the end of the year when he's needed most.

This may be unfair, but had we picked up Darling instead of Watson, we would have won this game quite comfortably.

This reminds me of the whole "if only we'd picked Rich instead of Yarran" epic, (which seems to have gone strangely quiet this year).
Give Watson a couple of years and then see what you think.

I'm sure Watson will be fine, and there are lots of good reasons why we picked him up where we did. In a couple of years Watson won't be able to impact the 2011 semi-final.

Darling was ready for AFL, Watson was not. West Coast had Darling in his first year make a major contribution towards winning a semi-final. So be it.

It's very very rare for a first year key position type to make an impact in year one, I'm jealous.

Same here.

I gave up screaming at Razor Ray by the third quarter though. I realized it actually feeds his ego and makes him worse.

I don't disagree, Figer. Trouble is we've had these games in the previous 2 years finals aswell.

I never bought into that goal of getting a home final & winning it. I've thought since the start of the season a prelim in 2011 should be the expectation. I don't think we would've been much of a show against the Cats next week to be honest, but our development took a big dent with that loss last night unfortunately.

How many of us would've thought when Judd crossed to the Blues that after 4 years we would've won one final? (against a shit team)

We've just got to fast track things next year & force our way into a GF. Geelong had heartbreak in 05, missed the finals in 06 then won it in 07. The Hawks were shit in 06, won a final in 07 then won it in 08. It can be done, but it won't be easy.

this was definitely a game we should have won

not sure if im bias cos i hate the eagles and i was at the game

but of the three bullshit close finals losses of the last 3 years this feels like the biggest opportunity lost/missed

if that loss doesnt fire the boys up for next year i dont know what will - i have a pounding hangover, a sore throat, no voice and feel like shit - but deep down i can feel anger and feel like i could run out on to a field and smack some heads around.

I'm sure the boys deep down would be feeling more anger than i am right now - carry it on to next year

we had the world against us last night and we fought and fought which brilliant but at the end of the day we are out.

next year needs to be about revenge.

I AM JACKS RAGING BILE DUCT
I AM REVENGE
I AM ANGRY
I AM RUTHLESS
I AM GOING TO SMASH YOU
I AM CARLTON 2012

Don't think I agree that out of the three heartbreakers, that this one was the worst in terms of opportunity lost (leaving aside the fact that this was for a prelim spot rather than a semi spot). I never felt like we were going to win in the last quarter last night - whereas vs the Lions and the Swans, we were in front. The one vs the Lions still haunts me and is still the angriest that I've ever been after a football game.

Whereas last night was like watching an agonisingly slow car crash where you occasionally thought maybe, just maybe, the car might miss the tree but always thought it didn't look good - in other words, like a TAC ad. It was actually a lot like the Pies v Eagles game from last week. We never got back in front after losing the lead last night. And while I sympathise with the feeling that bugger all went our way in terms of personnel and general rub of the green stuff - like the 4-5 goals they kicked that just carried - we actually didn't really give ourselves the opportunity to win the game. In saying that, I'm saying that we consistently had the margin at more than a goal and failed to get it under a goal for very long - the Simpson and O'hAilpin misses were so costly from that perspective.

Re the umpires - if we're surprised that they were bad last night, then we're idiots. It was a home final in Perth - you have to allow 3-4 goals against - I think we copped that. It's why we need home finals and why we have to aim for top 2 next year.

Yeah - the McGinnity goal in particular was devastating - just such a cheap, lucky, opportunistic goal.

Bottom six last night: o'hAilpin, Joseph, Armfield, Tuohy, Davies, Ellard
Bottom six last year: Jacobs, Armfield, Ellard, Hadley, Davies, Robinson
Bottom six 2009: Cloke, Wiggins, Grigg, Garlett, Joseph, Armfield

Based on that, we've seen Robbo and Garlett secure their spots in our best 22. Cloke, Wiggins, Grigg, Hadley, Jacobs have been cast off.

An overly simplistic way of looking at improvement next year is when Joseph and Armfield aren't in our best 22, and whether Tuohy/Ellard/Davies can cement their spot in our best 22 in the same way Robbo and Jeffy have.

Tuohy I'm convinced will do so, Davies has all the tools to do so, question marks on whether the opportunities will arise. Does Ellard have that upside?
