I really don't know about Ratten. I have always been concerned about a young inexperienced coach with a young group.
The issue is who else is there if we don't sign him? I certainly don't want Lyon. Watching that football each week would be a major turnoff. Malthouse or Roos maybe, but not available. Eade? Not sure. Richardson? Probably doing the coaching anyway.
People say we have improved, I am not sure. I don't believe we have bridged the gap with the top sides. Also, this crap about every player has improved in the past twelve months. Tell that to Austin, Russell, Mclean, Houlihan, Warnock, Lucas & Bower and it could be argued that a number of players have levelled off. Judge our performances against the Top 4 sides and I would suggest not many have improved.
Be very interesting what will happen. I get the impression that a few key Carlton people are sitting back and watching closely. If we lose to Essendon* we haven't gone anywhere!
I am not a fan of Ratts as a coach but I disagree to an extent in that I believe there are areas we have improved on this season most notably our defensive game and our defensive back six as a whole....also our midfield has gone up a notch....now who has been behind this improvement? I'm sure the assistants have played a major role namely Brown and Richardson.
However Ratts's role on the sidelines seems to have created a greater rapport between him and the players and this has also been beneficial to the group.
I agree that some players haven't come on this season and I also believe our fwd 50 entries and setups when going forward forward have not improved that much at all....this may be the responsibility of the forwards coach who I believe is Barker....now I really could not care less who is responsible for the improvement as I'm sure the club would know this and would therefore act based on this knowledge.
I would be inclined to give Ratts one more year to get us into the top 4....then review at the end of 2012.
I have no doubt we will beat the Scum as I do not rate them highly at all....
The biggest surprise is how far out if the top four we finished when IMO the quality of sides below 5th this year has been quite poor. This is why I view this season as a massive opportunity to make significant inroads towards ultimate success....
