Terrific observation. No, you can't. That's why brands segment a market, target the best segments, and position a product accordingly.

Target a segment. Pretty easy = Carlton supporters who use social media.

The fact we are talking about here and I have seen it all over FB shows it is working.

It works well on an emotional level. I like it and I am sure anything the club does will get the negative poo, pooers to post in TC.

My take is that it targets the core supporters (note most supporters in the video seem all to be of Italian/Greek heritage) to stir them to a) get more involved and "sell" the pride to others and b) get those many passionate supporters who do not buy memberships to finally do it (or at this stage at least think about it). Don't forget we have something like 7000 members every year who do not renew.

Clearly part of a strategy and good that we start "building" early with finals passion as the fuel. Engagement is a long process. I think they finally have a more sophisticated relationship strategy. Looking forward to the next steps.

The facebook page right now has 90,131 fans.

We have nowhere near that many members.

yes, but must be supported by strong consumer relations marketing eg. direct

surely we've got a database of every member over the last 20 yrs.

simple: got through the d/base, find the ones who arent currently signed up, and TARGET them 1st and foremost.

then go from there

That'd include a few of my cousin's children in Asia who have no idea who or what Carlton are and only 'liked' the facebook page because I did. Haha

I'm quite sure Andrew Walker's mark, which went viral on youtube in the U.S might have gotten us a fair few supporters and likes as well.

Gives me a tingle down the back watching it. I like it.

If with this they're wanting to appeal to and identify with an average joe supporter like me, I think they're bang on.

Thats the point, all the carlton people who are members are supposed to pass on a few email addresses of fellow supporters.

Hopefully the club works of getting these people involved and hopefully a few of them will decide to sign up in 2012.

I get more of a tingle watching the package they show before the bounce at home games. THAT is why I love the club, the memories and moments.

They'd be better off playing on all those moments, rather than the idea of each individual being Carlton. The message itself is isolated, too... WE ARE CARLTON implies unity and strength, that we are a collective. I am Carlton... doesn't work for me. It doesn't stir anything in me because I know I'm Carlton. I love it when I'm down at the shops during the week wearing a Carlton hat or my hoodie or whatever, and a complete stranger says "go Blues!", thats the sort of stuff that stirs my love of the club.

One time I had a great chat with this elderly man at Safeway about the club, he was waiting for his wife and he and I talked about the team and that weeks match for about 10 minutes until she appeared and said 'ahhh, another Blues man, good to see' and then apologised for him bailing me up. THAT is what the club means on a more community level, that is what they're trying to get at, I am Carlton falls flat because the strength of any club is its supporter base.

Wouldn't a collection of past and present players joined with fans saying "we are Carlton" have worked better?

Targets the true blue Blues and also kids

Goes to the root of what it is to be blue

Very emotional, best thing club have done

Far classier than most other club's commercials, and so if shown in mainstream TV should appeal to many CFC latent fans who haven't historically got membership

It's like "Wow, how cool are the Blues ! Very professional, modern, I'm down with that"

thats what happens when you use professionals to do it for you!

and when you add half a mill to the ad budget!
