The Swans v Lions game is on during the day on Saturday, so the result will be known by the time our match starts.

You'd expect Sydney to win and they're playing for a home final, but the Lions have been quite competitive the last two rounds and the events of the last week might have drained the Swans.

Time to pick the side for the finals and playing St Kilda at the MCG is the perfect opportunity to get it right before playing Essendon* in our first final.

B: Joseph Jamison Laidler
HB: Yarran Henderson Duigan
C: Simpson McLean Scotland
HF: Gibbs Setanta Robinson
F: Betts Kruezer Walker
Foll: Hampson Judd Murphy
Int: Carrazzo Ellard Russell (Garlett)

Key points:

Finals is about contested possession and work at the stoppages. I am not a huge fan of McLean but he fills a vital role and takes pressure off Judd.
Need size up forward and some mongrel. Hampson and Setanta to come in provide this.
The fact that we need to go to Setanta and Brock shows where we are lacking and need to address in trade week/draft.
Two smalls in finals is dangerous and never works. Garlett/Betts has to be a sub at best.
Lucas, Armfield, Touhy, Thronton, Warnock well in contention.

After yesterdays performance Setanta would be very lucky to retain his place in the Ants side

Are there any senior players you would rest?
Would Juddy benefit from a week off?

I wouldn't play Kreuzer i think he would benefit with another week off before the finals.

Play the boys that are on the fringes, not unhappy to send some regulars back to the Ants to improve their chances of staying in the finals another week (which is a great help in keeping our non-selected players in a game). Given that we've just come off the bye no need I wouldn't have thought to rest anyone completely.

Perhaps leave Judd and Murphy in the firsts - would hate to cost either a brownlow by dropping them to the 2s - but otherwise we are in fact more free to manage game time etc of the players in the firsts, where the result is immaterial, than in the Ánts where a win has tangible benefits.

How about this to face the saints:

Joseph (for Milne) Jamison Bower
Davies Henderson Russell
Curnow Armfield Lucas
Tuohy O'hAilpin Walker
Hampson Waite Ellard
Warnock Judd Murphy
Carrazzo Duigan Thornton Laidler

Plenty of guys keen to impress and stake a claim, others to hold their sopts. Clear knowledge there would be plenty of guys being demoted next week.

And the seconds something like:

Scotland Watson O'keeffe
Gibbs Austin Yarran
Simpson McLean Thomas
Garlett Casboult Twomey
Saad White Houlihan
Kreuzer Robinson Betts
Dare Iacobucci Meese McCorkell

Kreuzer to ruck with a chop-out from Meese, magnificent disposal out of defence, muckh improved ability to spread,

I know the old saqw about not flirting with form, but I'd be tempted to go down this path.

I would try squeeze Russell and Waite in if they are good to go - Dont care if Waite hasn't played we know what he is capable of - Need to select the side for first week of the finals and getting a game into Waite would be good

this is no time to be experimenting that should have been done weeks ago

They've got a home final at stake here, and will throw everything at us, and we need to match that intensity. This whole idea of taking it easy, experimenting with our gameplan, and/or playing guys who aren't fit, can GAGF as far as I'm concerned. This game will be like a final and we should treat it as such. Our best team vs their best team, both giving 100%.

Anything short of this would be a copout IMO, and if we cop a few bruises leading into September then so be it.

The fact that VFL finals have eligibility restrictions makes this rather difficult..

Nothing would satisfy me more than absolutely burying these smug pricks. Just watching Milne kick goals against the Roos on Saturday night made me want to smash his smug little ferret head in. No mercy, it's time to go for the jugular.

I think the boys will be thinking about the finals and will lift their eyes up from this game. I can smell a bad loss coming.

I can smell what's cooking, and it's not a bad loss.

I'd like to see White get a go, apart from that - full steam ahead

I agree.

The saints will know before going into the match if a home final is at stake. If Sydney win then the saints need to win to finish 6th.
For us, only thing to gain is trying a few things before Essendon* and coming out bruise free.
