Which is what? Because winning certainly won't do it (it'll be because of their injuries, us having more #1 picks etc). So best think of another reason.
I love the Carlton conspiracy theorists we have.
Do you honestly care if a commentator says we have a lot of #1 picks? fact is... we do! And if we win a premiership with them in the team.... we've won a premiership! For one, I couldn't give a stuff about style points, or how we win, or who is injured on the other team, or what any commentator says. Do you follow the team wanting it to win, or wanting to read glowing articles in the press? It's all about the result right?
So anyway, my take on why it's important to win tonight.
Fact is Hawthorn have done whatever they've wanted to do against us - for the most part - over the last several years. Anyone who was at the ground last year I'm sure would agree that while the margin wasn't as extreme as some of the hidings we were on the end of in the dark years - the gulf between the teams in terms of appetite for contest was as big as any gap over the last decade. And all the more galling for the fact that we thought we belonged in their company last year. I knew walking out of the ground last year that we had a lot further to go as a team than what I thought walking in.
In most commentators eyes, our list of required 'big scalps' is a list of three - the obvious three. And for validation as a credible challenger to Collingwood, we need to beat one of them. I think that's a completely fair position to take from their perspective. And it's exactly the same point which has been leveled at the bulldogs for the last several years, and has ultimately been proven to be true - so hardly a Carlton conspiracy there.
I honestly believe, that the vast majority of press coverage of the club and players has been fair (in 2011). There have been more articles praising, rightly, the improvement in our list than I can recall in any other season (possible exception 2000, although there was a huge amount of Essendon* that year as well for obvious reasons). I also honestly believe that the vast, vast majority of talk in the press if we win tonight will be centered around our arrival as a legitimate challenger this year - with no strings or qualifiers attached.
Which will be great to hear, and will provide a lot of external validation of how I feel about the team, but ultimately won't have any impact at all about how I feel about the win - because the win is why I follow the team, not the validation.
Go Blues! 24 points!
