Jamison set to return

Quote:
CARLTON coach Brett Ratten has confirmed defender Michael Jamison is likely to return to football this week after missing the last eight games recovering from a meniscus tear in his knee.

...

The coach said he was undecided whether Jamison would return through the VFL or be brought straight into the senior side to curb star Hawthorn forward Lance Franklin on Friday night.

...

Ratten said both Jamison and injured forward Jarrad Waite would play for VFL affiliate the Northern Bullants on August 27 during their bye week in an attempt to regain match fitness.

But Ratten said Waite, who is a key player in Carlton's forward line structure, was doubtful to return this week against the Hawks.

What complicates things I find is that the last two games for the Ants are at TEAC Oval and Casey respectively. Regular AFL players seem to find it just as hard, if not worse, to come up, playing on a bog, as they would playing at Etihad.

TEAC's a relatively decent surface, but I'm sure the MC would have preferred for a couple of Ants games at Visy to end the year.

Given Waite's situation, I'm not sure whether a half for the Ants is going to be particularly beneficial to him, but on the other hand, if he can't get through that,.....mothball time?

It'd be a decent workout for his hip without being too harsh. The softer the ground, the more likely it's going to give way before your joint. It's more work to get where you're going, but it's easier on the player for each motion, if you follow me.

Good workout for a player resuming from injury.

Casey actually has an excellent surface but if you get a strong wind there is no protection at all.

Fair enough. My opinion may be a little skewed, as the few times I've seen games there, it's looked a bog due to the weather (poor drainage perhaps?) and friends who do commentary for the community radio station there have told me some horror stories about it.

Either way, I think its a safe bet one of them (and Hammer) will be lining up against Fev next week.

It needed some repairs about 18 months ago, but it's in good shape now.

Just not true.

I heard Lloyd say this on radio yesterday, and the facts just don't back it up. Here's his record after missing games:

2011:
vs Richmond: 20 possessions, 13 marks, 3 goals
vs Geelong: 18 possiessions, 11 marks, 2 goals

2010:
vs Sydney: 18 possessions, 8 marks, 1 goal
vs Melbourne: 19 possessions, 10 marks, 3 goals
vs St Kilda: 11 possessions, 8 marks, 4 goals
vs Richmond (after doing knee): 17 possessions, 10 marks, 2 goals

Prior to doing his knee he basically didn't miss a game since 2006.

Granted, some of the above were after suspensions, and most were shorter breaks than he's had now, but it's still first up after an enforced layoff.

I certainly couldn't find any evidence to him being 'rubbish' first up, in fact I'd say he goes beautifully fresh. Get him in next week!

Davies has been solid and has showed his potential. However, we are two games away from the finals and it is vitally important that we are now putting our best 22 on the park.

Fair to say that the MC will be looking for Jamison, Waite, Russell to all come into the side. Given that, guys like Davies may miss out. Nice to know that we have some decent back up should the need arise.

Russell has struggled all year and shouldn't be considered just on 2010 form.
Davies has been selected to perform a role which he has done and if there continues to be a role for him to play he should continue to be selected.

I'm 50/50 on Russell myself at the moment but I feel Ratten will pick him.

Whether he is or not, who goes out for Waite and Jamo? You have Laidler, Duigan, Jamo, Yarran cemented in our back six as well as the option of Thornton or Henderson as other talls and Scotland, AJ/Touhy, Gibbs, Russell other as runners. My question is where does Davies fit in?

Like I said he has been good and I believe he will develop into a very good player but I just can't see him in our best 22 for this years finals.

Wonder if Tuohy misses due to wearing the cursed sub vest. On the other hand, don't see a logical match up for Davies either.

Maybe White gets a game finally?

Agree I think Carlos will be brought into the team this week. No major changes to the team but just for match ups. Not only does Carlos add much needed agression at the ball and man but also a marking target and tall who can play forward or defence and pinch hit in the ruck. Good match up for Hale and has played on Buddy in the past and has also shown he could play up forward. I think there would have to be some doubt over T-Bird and even if he is fit Hale is 201cm and Buddy 196cm so with Hendo on Buddy then Davies 188cm gets Hale and he is giving away a lot of height.

As I posted in the Bullants thread Setanta kicked 2.7 yesterday and from reports seems to be holding his marks and in good form...should be first cab of the rank if a replacement tall is needed this week but not sure I can see him forcing his way into the seniors other than as a replacement...

'day by day proposition' says that we shouldn't be factoring Waite into the equation any time soon.

Given that it's highly likely we finish 5th no matter what happens, we'd be crazy to rush anyone in who's not quite ready.

Hawks will test us, bigtime. They're playing some very good footy. Structurally we really need Thornton to come up this week. Hope he's good to go.

Beaser coaches our local footy club, and I share the dislike for the Dawks coach, make that "extreme dislike"

He's going to fit in perfectly then.
