Coaches' Votes
North Melbourne vs Carlton

9 Simpson (Carl)
7 Scotland (Carl)
6 Gibbs (Carl)
6 Swallow (NM)
2 Yarran (Carl).

I guess coaches know more than me, haha, but I think for all of Yarran's flashy runs he's still got a bit of work to do, which is natural for a kid of his experience.

Yarran is well on the way to being a gun player, no doubt. And already he has sublime foot skills on both sides of his body. He's superb to watch in that respect. But it takes a bit more than running and bouncing the ball to be a genuinely good player IMO. I think he needs more time to develop before the big wraps come out for him.

There was some interesting discussion about him from On the couch last night, where their concern over Yaz is how he will go in finals where you are more likely to have to defend first, run and carry second. I'm not saying he can't do that, just that I think he needs to prove himself in tougher situations than H&A footy provides.

I really thought Roos was off base in that discussion.

He was coming across as thinking that Yarran can't defend his man, which isn't the case at all. Some of his one on one defending this year has been very good, and has received praise from Ratts on more than one occasion.

Roos seemed to be of the opinion that Yarran attacking when in possession and having an opponent to defend was an either/or proposition, which clearly isn't the case.

I wonder what he thinks of Kennelly's defensive skills?

Ha! Funny you mention. Mike raised exactly the same point, and Roosy pretty much didn't say anything to suggest he thought Kennelly could defend either.

My opinion of Roosy has gone 180 over the course of the year. The first few weeks I thought he was sensational, but now - I was listening to that thinking to myself, 'not only is that wrong, but it's also stupid'.

Having said that, the first 20 minutes of OTC last night was fantastic - no coincidence that it involved Gerard getting a bit passionate instead of coasting, Mike having a real story to sink his teeth into, and Roos mostly keeping quiet.

The way that works is

5 votes Simpson Scotland
4 votes Swallow Simpson
3 votes Gibbs Gibbs
2 votes Scotland Swallow
1 vote Yarran Yarran

You would think it was Scott that gave Swallow the 4 votes. Of those 2 line ups, I'd probably agree more with Scott's.
