Well if we consider Ess a top 8 side, which is debatable, then reality is we have beaten just 2 top 8 sides all year, and so if we finish 5th we need to win 4 games on the trot without a loss in between against the top 8 sides - you do the math !!

Alternatively, we finish 4 and we tackle Pies whom we are getting closer and closer to, as our losing margins suggest. Get a bit lucky and win and we go straight to the penultimate weekend

Lose and we have to win 3 on the trot

Again, you do the math

Isnt it 'maths' ?

Top 4 would be a great advantage but it wont happen unless we go flat out for the next 5 weeks and destroy any chance of being fit and ready for finals football.
We will arrive at round 1 of finals mentally exhausted and physically spent to front up against the Pies who have had the luxury of resting players and loading up on training. They will smash us.

Sixth would be better than fifth. No-one will beat west coast week two in WA. The home crowd is like a drug for the eagles players.

Heard Dean Bailey the other day saying that "a loss like that doesn't forgo well for the future"... :?

Maybe he meant "all goes well"...

I wonder if Ratt's knows how to turn the flat out switch on and off?
I am sure our players will be striving to finish in the top 4 no matter who they are playing. The easy thing for them to do last Friday night was to roll over. It is an insult to Simmo and Duigan that you would write something like that.

Sorry. Yeah should not have wrote it like that. Didnt mean to insult anyone.

Just hope they have an eye for the finals rather than play blokes who could use a rest .Loading up on training in the weeks leading up to the games is also something we shouldnt sacrifice in the off chance WC drop one.

Just get our fitness in order and our game in order. If we scrape into the top 4 then so bit it but keep an eye on the big picture.

Watch the way collingwood, cats, saints and hawks approach the last month. You may remember Hawks getting flogged by the tigers late in 08' ,the pies getting done by the hawks last year and power chinning the cats at KP in 07.

Yes it is a advantage. It would be a amazing chance. We would be in a envious position. It would be a atrocity if we miss out. We cant let a opportunity like this go begging.

For mine, I just can't see us making top 4. The run home for the Eagles is so easy.

I think the massive game for us is Hawthorn (assuming we win all others, which i firmly believe we will).

It's unlikely, but if the Eagles win out and we beat Hawthorn, perhaps the % gap will swing enough to allow the Eagles to finish 3rd. Which would be fantastic because assuming Geelong and Collingwood hold serve week one, we would get Hawthorn at the G week two. I want no part of the Eagles in Perth. Not saying we couldn't beat them, but for us that would be the second toughest assignment behind beating Collingwood. I'm very confident against any other opponent on any other ground (assuming we won't play Geelong at Etihad in the finals).

I also for the life of me don't understand this theory doing the rounds that we wouldn't want to play St Kilda. what rubbish - I would be confident of beating them at the Dome, I would be super confident of beating them at the G. They're winning now because teams have either forgotten or don't have the matchup to put a hard tag on Goddard. We have Gibbs. Put some cover in front of Riewoldt, put an effort into Dal Santo, place fork in back , et voila.

We just can't afford to get too laxadaisical or we'll go out in a preliminary final and won't make it to the penultimate day.

Yes they could.

oh!!!! excellent point there bluegirl72..I suppose they could...especially the Cats. Yes...and then we would not have to travel to Perh in week 2.

All the commentary that I have read in press and seen on TV is about West Coast beating us out of 4th place.

Whilst I agree it will be tough for us - we will probably need to win all remaining games - has anybody comtemplated the possibility of Hawthorn and WCE fighting for 4th?

For this scenario, we would have to beat the Hawks and then hope that North or Bulldogs beat them as well.

Whilst the press seem to talk up the Hawks form since their early season slump, they have not beaten sides above them. Recent record is not convincing. There last three wins have been against Freo (good effort against a depleted side), Melbourne (by 9 goals) Brisbane (by 7 goals) LOSS to Collingwood by 3 goals more than we did, beat Essendon* by less than we did, beat Gold Coast by much less than we did, lost to Geelong by more than our loss.

So I think our focus should be on hunting down the Hawks rather than feeling we are being hunted by the Eagles.

Here's the ladder predictor for the Demons

MATT'S LADDER PREDICTION

1st Collingwood (21-1)
2nd Geelong (19-3)
3rd Hawthorn (18-4)
4th West Coast (17-5)
5th Carlton (15-1-6)
6th St Kilda (12-1-9)
7th Sydney (12-1-9)
8th Melbourne (10-1-11)

9th North Melbourne (10-12)
10th Western Bulldogs (10-12)
11th Essendon* (9-1-12)
12th Fremantle (9-13)
13th Adelaide (8-14)
14th Richmond (5-1-16)
15th Brisbane Lions (4-18)
16th Gold Coast (3-19)
17th Port Adelaide (2-20)

When I do my scenarios, I get the following

Coll
Geel
Haw
WCE
Carl
Syd
Stk
Melb
---
North
WBD
Ess
Freo
Rich
Adel
Bris
GC
Port

I believe our only saving grace to take fourth is West Coast travelling to Brisbane, and Brisbane playing out of their skins.

No more advantage than a Top 4 Swedish, or Danish for that matter.

Saturday - 13 and showers.

The line is set at 38.5, and Carlton unbackable at 1.12 for the win. Steer well away.

Melbourne +38.5 in the wet is the value bet here in my belief.

I said this elsewhere but its pretty astounding that a team that just got flogged by 180 points can still make the finals.

Then again, Norf were flogged by 117 points and can still take 8th spot.
