I'm as guilty as any one of keeping an eye on the 'top 4 race'.

The best we can do is take care of our end of the bargain and win as many games as possible. We'll end up where we end up. Hopefully top 4 but if not, it's not the end of the world.

We can't control other results so lets just worry about ourselves, getting our A game down pat and our best players healthy.

Being 'in form' and having our best players available and raring to go is critical for our Sept chances. IMHO we can still be a major player even from 5th or 6th if we have these factors in our favour.

Had Freo done the right thing, we'd be OK but they didn't. WCE have an easier draw than we do. IMO unless we win every game from here on in, we will finish 5th.
I have no idea what that will mean, only that we will play in Melb week one because we will be top of the bottom half and if we win, we may have to play WCE over there. If we lose, I think we're cooked.

Out of curiosity, which team has won the premiership from the lowest position in the top 8 ?

THIS.

It would be great to finish top 4 especially when we have been top 4 for most of the year. But if it doesn't happen then it doesn't happen and while it's tempting to blame a particular game during the season there's no point (especially game we never even looked like winning).

My main concern is having as many players injury free, match fit and available at the end of the season, and not finishing any lower than 6th to ensure we get that bloody home final at last.

The team we are competing with for top 4 is obviously WCE.

We play WCE in Melbourne and get a 6 goal beating (the week after beating the Swans easily at same venue). Sure, personnel issues that day, but 6 goals....

Loss to the Doggies is the one that could nail us for top 4, just not on. Doggies have lost both games convincingly, since.

WCE beat Doggies by 20 plus goals @ Subi, FWIW.

WCE are just as deserving of a top 4 spot as us, at this point in time anyway, just hope we finish the season stronger than them and can find a way to tip them out.

Yep, just looked it up. 1998 Adelaide won the Flag after finishing 5th with 13 wins / 9 losses. But the Finals system was the 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc etc.

And Adelaide lost their first final. The Finals system was changed in 2000 to as it is today and no team has won the flag form outside the top 4.

Might be time to rewrite the history books !!!!

Exactly!

We need to focus on the factors that we have a some control over ie. our performance. Aim to finish the season strongly and take that good form into the finals. There's no point in playing the "should have won , could have won" game. Waste of time and energy and doesn't change a thing. May find if we finish 5th that we end up playing St Kilda at the MCG two weeks in a row.

IIRC most years around this time many of us, myself included, think that we're
"pretty sure" about how most of the remaining games will play out.

Bet we're all wrong.

forget the top 4....we will finish 5th.

the main problem with that (apart from no double chance) is that even if we win our final in week 1, we will need to get on a plane to WA in week 2....tough ask that !

Exactly, if we win every game we will finish top 4. Forget about WCE, if we win every game we will finish above Hawthorn.

We won't.

Remember, they have a game on us, and we have that @#$%&! draw from earlier in the year. We have to count on Hawks losing one before then. The game against Freo this week is the biggest chance of that happening.

We win all our games, and either Freo or the Dogs win this week, we're top 4.

Even if we win every game we need Hawthorn to drop 2 games to finish above them. If the only game they lose is to us they will still be 2 points ahead of us (as they have 6 games to play and we only have 5).

That's why we need Freo to deliver. Sound familiar?

Incidentally, if you do a hypothetical on the predictor and have us lose ALL remaining games, we can't drop lower than 6.

So even if the worst should befall us, we'll have a final in Melbourne.
