don't have to go that far back.....

Melbourne came 16th in 1997 and then 4th in 1998.
Port Adelaide 14th to 3rd in 2001.

We all know that we have a tough run home, but worse still, with both West Coast and Hawks having 2 games on us and us not playing the Eagles again, it is conceivable that we could win all our remaining games and still miss out on the top 4. This in fact has been the case even before the start of this round. Both clubs seem to me to have winnable games all the way home. If the Hawks don't drop another game (other than against us) and they will be half a game ahead, Eagles win all their games and they likewise end up half a game ahead. Given we have over 12% on the Eagles, drawing with Essendon* first time could be the killer. Mind you. odds are we'll drop a couple of games, so might they, but I think we are up against it now.

As was the ONE POINT win that WC just had over Freo :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

We will finish 5th - we will play freo week 1 at Etihad and have to travel to play West coast week 2

The loss to the Doggies is proving very very costly

As is the Ess draw and 206's semi-conscious miss from 15m. Very unlucky to have WC being so good coming from bottom last year too.

At least we should definitely meet our target of winning 1 final, and we'll have learned plenty for the WC game too, hopefully with all our talls back.

A prelim is still a possibility.

We could finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th and play anyone from Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast, Fremantle, Sydney, St Kilda and Essendon*.

All we can do is play our best and see where we end up.

Let us review

Quote:
Us:
Norf (ES) - A bogey side at a bogey ground
Dees (MCG) - Will want to prove they aren't "bruise-free"
Freo (PS) - Our record against them is deplorable
Hawks (ES) - Ditto. Most important game of the year by far for a number of reasons.
Bye - @#$%&! it
Saints (MCG) - Saints coming into form, but playing at the G could work in our favour

Hawks:
Freo (PS) - Could go either way, Hawks have struggled against them over there in the past
Norf (TAS) - Should win, but again Norf seem to play well against them
Port (MCG) - Percentage
Us (ES) - Duh
Doggies (MCG) - Should be too strong
Gold Goast (M) - Percentage

Eagles:
Doggies (ES) - The battle of the teams that [REDACTED] up our chances. We'd better pray like crazy for the Dogs to win this, because if they don't, WC will jump us, simple
Richmond (PS) - Percentage
Melbourne (ES) - Should win comfortably
Scum (PS) - Percentage
Brisbane (G) - Should win, although Lions do well against them up there
Adelaide (PS) - Percentage

In short:
- We lose one game and WC jump us (and we probably miss out on top 4)
- We win all our games, but Doggies (and perhaps Dees) don't knock WC off in Melbourne, WC jump us (and we probably miss out on top 4)
- Hawks almost as much in danger as us, and like us have some loseable games. We must beat them, and hope that Freo knock them off next week.
- Next week, we barrack as hard for Freo and the Dogs as we do our own team

Unfortunately, we destroyed our chances to win the flag with the WC & Bulldogs losses. These are games that top 4 teams don't lose. We thought we where and wanted to be a top 4 team but unfortunately proved we are not. We need to live with it and hopefully save some face come finals time as straight set loses with not be tolerated. I'm sure I'll get the usual smart ass replies ...

yes it seems we'll have to rely on others for us to make the top 4 now, Even if we win every game from here on in.

Carlton plays

Nth Melb (E)
Melbourne (MCG)
Fremantle (Pat)
Hawthorn (E)
Bye
St.Kilda (MCG)

WEST COAST plays

Bulldogs (E)
Richmond (Pat)
Melbourne (E)
Essendon* (Pat)
Brisbane (Gabba)
Adelaide (Pat)

So due to us having the bye, even if we and WC win every remaining game, they will claim 4th.

Not sure if I posted this elsewhere, or just had the discussion with someone...

The team finishing 4th in the last 10 seasons:

2010: Dogs 14 wins
2009: Coll 15 wins
2008: St K 13 wins
2007: North 14 wins
2006: Syd 14 wins
2005: St K 14 wins
2004: Geel 15 wins
2003: Syd 14 wins
2002: Coll 13 wins
2001: Rich 15 wins

3 x 15, 5 x 14, 2 x 13.

This year, it could take 17 wins to finish 4th, certainly at least 16. That's a tough ask!

We will just fine from 5th or 6th. Late bye will be handy. Just hope we dont get too caught up in the race for top 4 and not load up and prepare for the finals.

... As for top 4 team not losing games to Western Bulldogs how do does that explain the Cats losing to the dons.

Exactly that was the inexcusable loss....very soft team....probably won't win another game this season....opportunity lost....very poor effort in that game by all concerned....

with the gold coast coming in it means you have another team only capable of winning 3-4 games. that translates for more wins to the top teams and more wins required to make top 4. unfortunately for us hawthorn happen to play gold coast and @#$%&! port twice this year. the draw is a @#$%&! joke

Wouldn't go that far just yet, but we certainly put ourselves in the shit because of those games. I hope this fact isn't lost on the playing group either.

I would argue if you want to play "blame the game" the Geelong and Rd 4 Essendon* game would be the culprits.

We were never in the Eagles game, and despite being up in the 2nd quarter looked all at sea for most of the Dogs game.

Shattered that the Eagles won.
If the Dogs can play as well against the Eagles next as they did against us then we are still a decent show for the top 4.
I think the Demons are a chance to knock of the Eagles in Melbourne in a few weeks providing they are close to full strength.
