Defence - Even at full strength I would back ours, mainly due to the emergence of Jamison. I think we generate a bit more run of out defence as well.

Derm's gone on record saying we won't be able to trouble their defence (because we don't have the tall forwards that Hawthorn struggle to cope with). Which suggests that he's got no interest in balanced or fair analysis. He just wants to say that Hawthorn are clearly better in every area. :banghead:

Maybe he'd concede we're got better ruck stocks. Or knowing Derm, maybe he'd suggest that rucks aren't all that important. But what does matter is that they've got real mongrel in them. And given that Renouf is clearly more 'thuggish' than our guys, therefore the Hawthorn rucks turn out to be better after all. :donk:

Hey, Dermie, if you're allowed to count Cyril and Hodge as part of your superior midfield depth (although they don't actually spend much time in there). Does that mean we're allowed to count Kreuzer? He's more of a midfielder than either of your 2 guys. And he's clearly a better midfielder than Hodge.

The reality is Hawthorn don't respect us. Why should they? They've crushed us for years. It is up to us to change that in round 22 or whenever it is we play them

Exactly. Hawforn has had our measure for a decade, and dealt out some impressive thumpings along the way.

Carlton change that this year, and Dermie and co get put back in their box.

FWIW I like listening to Dermott and appreciate his insight into football. I think he understands what it takes to be a tough but high level footballer.

When he used to play out at Woori Yallock with Monkhorst, whenever he took the field the opposition would try to knock his head off. He'd get up every time and go back and take his kick.

If Hawthorn and Carlton both fielded their best teams, I'm not sure what would happen. In past years we'd get pasted.

The OP stated that Mitchell wasn't an A grade midfielder. I beg to differ. I think he's in the elite bracket. He is different to the likes of Hodge, Judd, Murphy, but he is still elite IMHO.

Bateman, Burgoyne etc might be capable of A grade performances, but that doesn't make them A graders.

Burgoyne's effectiveness swings from week to week like a yo yo. When he's actually on the park. Same goes for Bateman.

Mitchell is having a great year and is the only member of that midfield (possibly Sewell as well) who brings his best consistently. Hodge has never been and never will be a full time midfielder. He pinch hits when needed and to me doesn't have the body that would take extended time in the guts. Rioli is in the same boat. I just don't see Sewell as a difference maker to the point where he would be considered an A grader. He's a very good stopper.

Hawthorn are a team that is capable of great performances. But there's a good reason why they haven't fired a shot since 2008.

Yep, the guy who started the thread had Mitchell outside the Elite. I'd be inclined to include im in the Elite. He's on par with Hodge.

Spot on and it's the same reason the Brave Dons fans are still "not sure" about our new success.

Anything Brereton or his backslapping mate Lyon say should be taken with a grain of salt

Wankers, the two of them
