So if you got transferred to a different division you wouldn't be mates with them - what a dumb arguement

So are you saying that Kennedy hasn't formed any mateships at the Westcoast - Judd hates everyone at Carlton because all his mates were at West Coast

see it is emotive crap - there is no rational thought that goes into it - the players are sucked in -

Mods is there any chance we could organise a trade with Nicks Board, maybe we could get Mandy back for SB?

SB Kruze made a decision that he felt was best for him not only money wise but also emontionally.

I respect that decision and I thank him for it.

But to call imply he is an idiot for not taking the money and run is just insulting.

Using your logic I should have given my knowledge and skillset a 'security contractor' in Iraq, hell I was even offered a lucative contract to do so. Instead I chose to stay here in Melbourne with my son and work in a much lower paying field that does give me a lot job satisfaction.

AFL is a business, yes, but it isn't like a normal business, without passion/emotion from players and fans it would be nothing. Not everything is a cold calculated decision to just take whatever the best bid is regardless of your current situation. Playing for GWS would be like leaving a job you love, with all your mates but leaving to spend 5 years on an oil rig. Sure, you may earn a lot of cash, but thing will never be the same where you are now.

SB, you mention how the average games played for an AFL player is 50 or so, this is true, but that includes all the fringe/average/mediocre players. Kreuzer is not one of those. Baring catastrophe he will play for another 10-12 years.

I can see the argument that AFL is probably their best chance to earn as much money as they are at any stage for the rest of their lives. BUT, it is not simply 'another job'. Passion is involved, which isn't for the average accountant, construction worker, IT support person etc.

Another thing with Kreuzer you haven't considered, if he stays at Carlton for 10-12 years, he could be a Carlton legend by then, having grown with a whole group of mates. Its called living the dream, and the dream doesn't always mean going to the highest bidder.

Also comparisons to a free market soccer system make no sense, Beckham was being offered like 4 times what even Real Madrid would pay him, and he was past his best by this stage (though still too good to be at LA Galaxy). Sure the money Kreuzer is being offered now may be about double what Carlton would give him for the next 3-4 years, but with the CBA yet to be determined, and GWS coming under cap pressure by that time his relative earning power would decrease. So not comparable to a free market system.

I bet Kruezers dream growing up was pulling on the Black and White - so it is not living a dream at all

It is excepting bad advice

you dont get a choice who you play for you are told where to go otherwise you dont play - Its simple

so why when you get a once in a life time chance to grab what ever is on offer havent the player managers advised them correctly .

I look at Walker he was offered up like a piece of meat - Here do you want him - He stayed because the club either didnt want to or couldn't e bothered negotiating a trade - I hope for his sake now he is playing brilliant football he is looked after accordingly

No one's considered there might have been a conversation or 2 with Jeannie going something like "GWS can look after you for 10 years. Carlton can look after you for life..."

Greg Swan repeated on 3AW today that this meme, constantly repeated by footy commentators on 3AW and Ch7, is not correct. You're engaging in the emotional sensationalism you were projecting onto big Kruze (who dwarfs you in intelligence obviously).

1AW asked to look around at end of season (I think he was frustrated at not being considered played as a forward every week). Adelaide offered to take him from us but in the end he wasn't interested. Carlton always said he was a required player at the time and didn't want to let him go, good judgement eh.

*snip*
Big K wont run out of clubs trying to pouch him for the rest of his career if he stays fit and injury free, (touch wood and all that…) so he can take his time on offers. I just hope he stays and enjoys becoming a one club legend at CFC. Such a talented and determined a player.

Its a dream of playing with a group of mates you have a bond with, that is no trivial thing.

Also a point your conveniently forgetting that I made is the real amount of $$ difference probably wont be that great in the scheme of things when they have to slash his wages when all GWS's other young guns are demanding big bucks in 2015-16, when he would still be one of our top earning players regardless. I also think being a top club legend at a club like Carlton will hold a lot more weight to potential future earnings/business opportunities than going to GWS.

I hope I've got the gist of the arguments correct in my response below:

Firstly SB - you are assuming his MK's manager advised him not to go to GWS..........is that true???? Perhaps his manager just said to him - "Matty - there's an offer on the table from GWS of $4m over 5 yrs (as an example) - do you want me to follow it up? Would you be interested?"........Matty may have said - "Very flattering but no thanks".

It's not the managers role to TELL Matthew where to play.....it's to present the facts to Matthew and to allow him to make up his own mind. I recall Liam Pickering saying that's how was presenting Gold Coast's offer to Ablett. Then leaving the decision up to Ablett.

Even if the manager did say - I think you should go to GWS...........there could be a number of reasons why MK said no.

1) As woof said earlier.......because he doesn't want to live in Sydney - may be as simple as this.
2) Doesn't want to leave his family
3) Perhaps he has been told that while he may miss out on millions of dollars in his playing career - that he will be more than looked after by certain influential (read mega rich) Carlton benefactors once his playing career is over.
4) Realised that while he may be handsomely rewarded financially - he prefers being at Carlton over the next 5 years as he doesn't believe GWS will be competitive in that period.

Maybe these wouldn't be entertained by yourself in such a decision.......but maybe one or more of these were reasons Kreuzer made his decision. Any one of them could have been a valid reason for knocking back any offer from GWS.

Nothing wrong with that.

Most kids who run around their backyard kicking a footy will on more than a few occasions pretend they're taking a shot after the siren to win the AFL premiership. Footy is more a business than ever, but not many businesses are like footy.

Sydney Blue, if I was Kreuze, a humble young man from Melbourne, being taken as the number one draft pick, to a Melbourne club that loves him and his family, and has nurtured him through his first baby steps in the AFL, and healed and rehabilitated him through a serious injury, and provided him with teammates like Judd and Murphy and Gibbs and Duigan and Simmo and Setanta and a decent coaching staff, and I mean decent, and played for the most successful club in history and was loved and embraced by a loyal fan base in packed stadiums in every week, at a point in time when this talented team from this famous club was about to emerge from their darkest days to open a 10-year window of sustained success, and I was guaranteed to be a part of that march into history ...

... you couldn't pay me enough to go to Greater Western Sydney.
