Isn't Dermie the Einstein who, as a youngster, in his first job at the AFL, he mailed a letter to another AFL department that was located one floor above him at AFL House?

For him to come out with this shows he clearly thinks we are a threat. Previously he wouldn`t even bother comparing us to his precious Hawks. So many commentators can`t get past their personal bias to give an honest assessment.
He`s about to discuss again on SEN.

The fact that the footy community (including Dawk supporters) considers the Dawks victory over the cocky Cats as a lucky one considering they didn't beat them prior to that one game, and haven't since, is good reason why Dermie will do anything and say anything he can do give the Dawks some credibility.

The fact he speaks rubbish, and he isn't respected in the footy community (outside his football ability on the field) no one will believe him anyway, and as a Carlton supporter you have to laugh.

Sugarcane, you are wrong. They are nowhere near us in the midfield.

Judd > Hodge
Murphy > Mitchell
Gibbs > Burgoyne
Scotland > Sewell
Simpson > Lewis
Carrazzo > Ladson
Robinson > Young
Ellard > Bateman
Curnow > Savage
Armfield > Shiels
Walker > Smith
Russell = Rioli
Yarran
Garlett
Betts

Do you see what I see?
It aint what Dermie says, abut its probably what Dermie sees.

Envy.

Shiels is not an up and coming kid anymore...watch him closely...he's a gun.

This is staggering Bondi....how much of the Hawks have you seen?

One has played every game this season and the other can't get a game ahead of a player from Ireland!

It's interesting hearing Dermotts analogy for a good midfield. He talks about throwing guys in the centre square and seeing who gets it out.
The reality is, Hawthorn dont have a 1st possession player in the AFLs top 20. Carlton have 2 (Hodge is the leagues 86th best player on average 1st clearances)
Hawthorn have 2 players in the AFLs top 80 for clearances. Carlton have 5.
Carlton are top 2 and top 4 for clearances as a team and first possessions respectively. Hawthorn are average.

Reality and statistics mean more than uninformed opinion.

Great post. I had my doubts about the stats backing up his position, but didn't know where to look.

Hodge is a quality player but he is yet to become a reliable consistent midfielder. He body doesnt stand up to the rigours and his endurance is questionable.
He may be an A grade player but he's a B grade mid.

I agree. Also really struggles with a midfield tag.

And even though Rioli is an electric player, and brilliant at clearances, he doesn't actually spend much time in midfield. You could use the same argument to argue that Betts is an A grade midfielder, since I reckon he would have a high percentage of clearances on the few occasions he actually goes into the centre square.

He is loyal to his club.

I'd be pissed off if Wayne Johnston or Jimmy Buckley didn't say the same thing about the carlton midfield.

There is loyalty then their is being irrational

Gun is a big call, he's certainly on the up but I would stop short of calling him a Gun

Anyhow, what's your view of the bigger picture effes? Whose midfield bats deper?

Rioli is hardly a midfielder
Absolute class player, but you could also argue Yarran is class off HB as is Jeffy in the FP
Shame some commentators still do their job with rose coloured glasses on

Maybe I'm doing a Dermie and I may be slightly bias.

But I do know our midfield is better than the Hawks'.

I have this discussion with a lot of my Hawks mates, and dead set they do see the advantage ours has over theirs.
If we're talking 2011, it all starts with the advantage of having Judd and Murphy, and from there on we trump them every time.

i think they are pretty even midfields. looking at it from an unbiased view

i would say juddy and murphy are our A graders and hawthorns are mitchell and hodge

then we have simpson, scotland, carazzo, robinson, gibbs etc as b graders

hawks have sewell, burgoyne, bateman, young shiels birchell riloi, lewis

ours is playing some good football and looking at the hawks midfield they do bat deep, but i would say pretty even.

personally our views are just as biased as dermies on the hawks

I heard Dermie today. He is entitled to his opinion. A caller asked him about Collingwood and he said they had 3-4 A grade midfielders but because of the structure it was as important. He mentioned that because we only had 3 he classed as A grade if one or two were to get injured that we were in trouble as there wasnt the depth to cover them. While this is true to extent you could argue the same with most sides. He didnt think Simpson was an A grader, i think he rated him as B.
Dermie is full of it, seems he is getting worried.
